Windows 명령 프롬프트에서 telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl을 실행하면, 서버가 온라인이고 네트워크에서 TCP 23번 연결을 허용하는 경우 ASCII 문자로 표현된 스타워즈 애니메이션을 볼 수 있습니다. 일반적인 영화 스트리밍은 아니며, Telnet Client가 설치되어 있어야 합니다.
먼저 알아둘 점
이 방식은 영화 파일을 내려받거나 일반 동영상 플레이어로 재생하는 것이 아닙니다. Telnet으로 원격 서버에 연결해 서버가 보내는 터미널 문자 출력을 표시합니다. 이 서비스는 보통 Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope의 ASCII 버전으로 알려져 있지만, 서버의 현재 상태와 제공 콘텐츠는 달라질 수 있습니다. 일반적인 영상·음성 재생, 일시정지, 탐색 막대, 볼륨 조절은 기대하지 마세요. 인터넷 연결이 필요합니다.

Windows에서 Telnet Client 켜기
- 시작 메뉴를 열고 Windows 기능 켜기/끄기를 검색해 실행합니다.
- 기능 목록에서 Telnet Client를 선택합니다.
- 확인을 눌러 설치를 마칩니다. 관리 권한을 요구하는 경우 PC의 일반적인 Windows 기능 설치 절차를 따르세요.
- 설치가 끝나면 명령 프롬프트를 새로 엽니다. Windows 업데이트나 표시 언어에 따라 기능 이름이 조금 다를 수 있습니다.
설치 여부를 확인하려면 명령 프롬프트에 telnet을 입력하고 Enter를 누릅니다. 설치되어 있으면 Microsoft Telnet> 같은 프롬프트가 나타날 수 있습니다. 매개변수 없이 실행하면 Telnet 컨텍스트로 들어가는 동작은 Microsoft 문서에 설명되어 있습니다. 'telnet' is not recognized 오류가 나오면 Client 기능을 켠 뒤 새 명령 창에서 다시 확인하세요.

명령 프롬프트에서 ASCII 스타워즈 실행하기
- Win+R을 누르고
cmd를 입력한 다음 Enter를 눌러 명령 프롬프트를 엽니다. 시작 메뉴에서 명령 프롬프트를 검색해도 됩니다. - 다음 명령을 입력하고 Enter를 누릅니다.
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nlTelnet 명령의 일반적인 형식은 telnet <호스트> [<포트>]이며 포트를 생략하면 기본 TCP 포트인 23번을 사용합니다. 포트를 명시하고 싶다면 telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl 23을 입력하면 됩니다.
Telnet 프롬프트에 이미 들어간 경우에는 o를 입력하고 Enter를 누른 뒤, 호스트 이름 towel.blinkenlights.nl을 입력해 연결할 수도 있습니다.
Windows 11과 Windows Terminal
Windows 11에서는 명령 프롬프트 창이 Windows Terminal 안의 탭으로 열릴 수 있습니다. 이는 표시되는 창이 달라진 것이지 명령 자체가 달라진 것은 아닙니다. 명령 프롬프트 탭에서 같은 Telnet 명령을 실행하면 됩니다. Microsoft는 Windows 11에서 콘솔 앱이 Windows Terminal에 표시될 수 있다고 Windows 명령 프롬프트 및 PowerShell 안내에서 설명합니다.

PowerShell에서도 Telnet Client가 설치되어 있다면 같은 명령을 실행할 수 있습니다. ASCII 화면이 잘리거나 어색하게 보이면 터미널 창을 넓혀 보세요. 문자 애니메이션은 창 크기와 터미널 표시 설정에 영향을 받을 수 있습니다.
재생을 중단하는 방법
- Telnet 세션에서 Ctrl+]를 눌러 Telnet 프롬프트로 돌아갑니다.
quit을 입력하고 Enter를 누릅니다.
터미널 환경에 따라 이스케이프 키가 다르게 동작할 수 있습니다. 반응이 없다면 명령 프롬프트 창이나 Windows Terminal 탭을 닫아 세션을 종료할 수 있습니다.
연결되지 않을 때 확인할 것
'telnet' is not recognized
Telnet Client가 설치되지 않았거나 기능 설치가 완료되지 않은 경우입니다. Windows 기능 켜기/끄기에서 Telnet Client를 선택하고, 설치가 끝난 뒤 새 명령 프롬프트를 열어 다시 시도하세요.

“Could not open connection” 또는 연결 실패
원인은 원격 서버의 일시적인 장애, DNS 문제, 불안정한 인터넷 연결, 또는 방화벽·라우터·회사나 학교 네트워크의 TCP 23번 포트 차단일 수 있습니다. 호스트 이름이 해석되는지 확인하려면 다음을 실행할 수 있습니다.
nslookup towel.blinkenlights.nl그런 다음 포트를 명시해 다시 시도해 보세요.
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl 23nslookup이 주소를 찾더라도 Telnet 접속이 된다는 뜻은 아니며, ping이 성공해도 TCP 23번 포트가 열려 있다는 보장은 없습니다. 이름 확인과 실제 TCP 연결은 별개의 단계입니다. 회사·학교·공공 네트워크에서 차단된 경우 정책을 우회하지 말고 네트워크 관리자에게 확인하거나 다른 허용된 네트워크에서 시도하세요. 서버의 실시간 가용성은 보장할 수 없습니다.

화면이 검거나 글자가 깨짐
연결이 성립하지 않아 빈 화면일 수도 있고, 터미널 표시가 맞지 않는 것일 수도 있습니다. 먼저 잠시 기다리고, 창을 넓힌 뒤 다시 연결해 보세요. 고정폭 글꼴과 기본 확대율도 도움이 될 수 있습니다. Telnet 클라이언트의 터미널 유형 옵션으로 vtnt를 시도하는 방법도 있습니다.
telnet /t vtnt towel.blinkenlights.nl이는 일반적인 표시 문제 해결 시도일 뿐, 해당 서버가 특정 터미널 유형을 요구한다고 확인된 것은 아닙니다. 연결이 계속 멈춰 있거나 끊기면 서버 또는 네트워크 문제일 수 있으므로 세션을 종료하고 나중에 다시 시도하세요.

안전과 이용 범위
Telnet은 암호화되지 않은 평문 프로토콜입니다. 이 공개 ASCII 스트림처럼 단순한 용도라도, 사용자 이름·비밀번호·개인정보를 입력해야 하는 서비스에는 Telnet을 사용하지 마세요. 이 명령은 통상 별도 프로그램을 설치하거나 관리자 권한을 요구하지 않지만, 원격 서버에 네트워크 연결을 만듭니다. 출처를 모르는 주소에는 접속하지 않는 것이 좋습니다.

macOS와 Linux에서는?
Telnet 클라이언트가 설치된 Linux나 macOS 환경에서는 같은 호스트와 포트에 접속할 수 있지만, Telnet 설치 여부와 절차는 운영체제·배포판에 따라 다릅니다. Unix 계열에서 nc towel.blinkenlights.nl 23 같은 netcat 명령이 대안으로 언급되기도 하지만, 이는 Windows 기본 명령 프롬프트용 절차가 아닙니다. Windows 사용자라면 별도 클라이언트를 내려받기보다 기본 Telnet Client 기능부터 확인하세요.
