Season 3 of AMC’s Dark Winds runs eight episodes and begins six months after Season 2. It follows two storylines at once: Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee searching for two missing boys, and Bernadette Manuelito’s Border Patrol posting, 500 miles from home. By the finale, Bernadette is back with Chee, while Joe’s relationship with Emma is still unresolved and most of the central characters are left without easy answers.
What Season 3 sets up
AMC describes the drama as following Navajo Tribal Police officers Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernadette Manuelito as they solve crimes in the 1970s. Season 3 picks up six months after Season 2 and splits its attention between the Navajo Nation and the border.

The missing boys at home
Leaphorn and Chee investigate the disappearance of two boys. The first clues are an abandoned bicycle and a blood-stained patch of ground, and the case becomes the season’s home-front spine.
Bernadette’s Border Patrol posting
Bernadette tries to settle into a Border Patrol job 500 miles from home and uncovers a conspiracy involving human and drug smuggling. Her thread runs alongside the investigation at home, and the season keeps returning to the personal strain that distance and her choices create for her and the people around her.

How the books fit in
AMC says the series is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels. Its announcement does not say that any single novel is adapted in Season 3, so treat the books as the source material for the series overall rather than a guide to this season’s plot.

Bernadette returns to Chee
TVLine reports that Bernadette returns to Chee at the end of the finale. The outcome is a reunion of sorts, but the season has spent its run showing how much distance and secrecy have cost, so it reads as a step rather than a settled ending.

Joe, Emma, and the garden fence

The A.V. Club reads the ending as leaving the central characters without easy answers while keeping the possibility of fresh starts open. That is the publication’s interpretation, not an official AMC explanation.

Season 3’s audience numbers
AMC Networks reported figures for the Season 3 premiere in 2025. These are company-reported numbers, not independently audited estimates.
- The premiere drew 2.2 million viewers in Nielsen live+3 ratings.
- AMC+ viewership for the premiere was up more than 50 percent over Season 2, according to the company.
In a March 14, 2025 press release, Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said: “We are so proud of this series, and so thankful for the response from fans and critics to the storytelling, the performances and the authenticity that comes through in every frame.”

What comes after Season 3
AMC announced Season 4 as an eight-episode season with a premiere date of Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+. That date has passed, and this recap does not cover Season 4 episodes. The announced premise is a search for a missing Navajo girl that takes Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito from the Navajo Nation to 1970s Los Angeles, where they pursue an obsessive killer tied to organized crime.
In AMC’s renewal announcement, Zahn McClarnon, identified there as an executive producer and star, said: “I’m looking forward to exploring and inhabiting the character of Joe Leaphorn once again in Season 4, and I’m excited to make my directorial debut on a show that means so much to me.”
