Eman Askar’s short, sea-shanty-style video turns a sweeping account of Palestine’s history into a song. Its personified “England” lyric is advocacy framing, not a historical quotation: the record is more specific about Britain’s role, and the song compresses events that need their own context.

Who is Eman Askar?

Askar is an Egyptian content creator who made and sang the video, which she shared on Instagram as @emmasworld.101. Scroll published a post about it on May 20, 2021, and The Independent described it the next day as a sea-shanty-style video.

Askar told The Independent: “I made this video to inform and teach people about what happened before and what’s hapenning now. I tried to make it as simple as possible with no intention of hatred in my mind. It was more of a history lesson packed in a song.” That describes her stated aim; it does not establish the accuracy of every lyric.

What does the song’s “England” line mean?

The lyric “England was like hey, this beautiful land is totally mine” turns Britain’s involvement into a memorable, personified line. It should not be read as a documented statement by a British official or as a precise account of how Palestine came under British administration.

The UN’s history overview gives a more specific account: after the First World War, former Ottoman territories were placed under administration through the League of Nations system. The League assigned the Mandate for Palestine to the United Kingdom in 1922. Its terms incorporated the 1917 Balfour Declaration commitment concerning the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. That history is more complicated than Britain simply claiming the land as its own.

What history does the song compress?

The song moves quickly from Ottoman rule through British administration, partition, war and Palestinian displacement. The following chronology distinguishes its broad musical framing from what the UN overview says about specific events.

Ottoman rule and the British Mandate

Palestine was among the former Ottoman territories placed under UK administration through the League of Nations system. The Mandate was assigned in 1922 and incorporated the 1917 Balfour Declaration commitment. This chronology does not mean that a modern nation-state with unchanged borders and institutions existed throughout the Ottoman period.

The 1947 UN partition plan

In 1947, the UN General Assembly recommended ending the Mandate and partitioning Palestine into an Arab state and a Jewish state, with Jerusalem under an international regime. This was a recommendation, not a completed political settlement; it did not resolve the conflict.

The 1948 war and Palestinian displacement

Israel declared independence in May 1948 as war spread. The UN overview says Israel expanded to 77 percent of Mandate Palestine during the war, and that over half of the Palestinian Arab population fled or were expelled. The UN describes the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the war as the Nakba, Arabic for “catastrophe.” The UN’s wording preserves an important distinction: people fled or were expelled, rather than all experiencing a single form of displacement.

Is the song’s history accurate?

It works as a compressed advocacy narrative, not as a neutral or comprehensive history. Its broad sequence points toward real historical turning points, but a short song necessarily reduces complex events and political decisions to a few lines. In particular, the “England” lyric is a metaphorical summary, not a literal quote or a full explanation of the Mandate.

The UN chronology supports the specific points above about the Mandate, the partition recommendation, the 1948 war and displacement. Those points do not, by themselves, settle every claim the lyrics may make about intent, responsibility, the right of return or apartheid. Such claims require their own historical or legal evidence; the song’s wording alone cannot establish them.

How widely was the video seen?

The Independent reported on May 21, 2021, that the video had received more than 10 million views in less than 48 hours. That is a figure reported at the time, not a current view count or an independently audited total.
