Mikhail Gorbachev is not a verified Wigan Athletic fan. The Wigan Athletic Supporters Club’s history of the 1970/71 season treats his supposed link to the club as a rumour, and a 2018 Bleacher Report article reports that commercial director John Fillingham admitted in 2005 that the story was made up. Richard Ashcroft is firmly connected to Wigan as a native and a returning performer, but the sources available do not show that he supports Wigan Athletic. Other names on popular fan lists are reported claims, not confirmed supporters. There is no definitive list of famous Latics supporters that the evidence can back up, so the useful approach is to separate what is confirmed from what is only repeated.
The Gorbachev story: a rumour that became club folklore
The Wigan Athletic Supporters Club’s retrospective on the 1970/71 season records a rumour that placed Mikhail Gorbachev in a party accompanying the Soviet side Metallist Kharkov. The club’s own account presents this as a rumour. It does not say that Gorbachev supported Wigan, and it gives no independent evidence that he had any connection to the club beyond the tale itself.
What the reported 2005 admission says
A 2018 Bleacher Report article reports that John Fillingham, the club’s commercial director, admitted in 2005 that the Gorbachev story was made up. This is a secondary account. No transcript or direct quotation of the original 2005 remark is available to confirm its exact wording, so the admission should be read as reported rather than as a verified quotation.
What this means for the claim
- The club’s own history labels the association a rumour.
- A later secondary report says the commercial director admitted the story was invented.
- No primary evidence places Gorbachev at Wigan Athletic matches, in club records, or in statements of his own.
Richard Ashcroft: a Wigan native, not a verified club supporter
Ashcroft’s connection to Wigan is well documented. Wigan Today, in an article dated 16 April 2024, reported that he was born at Billinge Hospital, attended Up Holland High School and Winstanley College, and that The Verve formed in the area. Those details establish where he comes from.

The 2024 homecoming shows
In July 2024 Ashcroft played two homecoming shows in Wigan and said he was happy to be home, according to ITV News Granada’s report dated 22 July 2024. These statements show a strong hometown bond. They are not statements about football, and the material reviewed does not include Ashcroft saying he supports Wigan Athletic. Being from Wigan and being a Wigan Athletic supporter are different claims, and only the first is currently supported.
Other names on fan lists
A Bleacher Report celebrity-fan list names Ashcroft, Stuart Maconie and Gorbachev. The list repeats these names but, in the material reviewed, does not include a direct statement from any of the people named. For Maconie, no primary confirmation of Wigan Athletic support was found. He should be treated as an unverified name until he, or a named club source, says otherwise. The same applies to any other name that appears only on a list.

Checks to run before repeating a name
- Is the source the club, a named official, or the person themselves? If not, label the claim as secondary.
- Does the claim concern allegiance (supporting the club) or origin (coming from the town)? Only the first counts as fandom.
- Is there a date and an identifiable origin for the story? Undated anecdotes are the most likely to be repeated without checking.
- For club history, the Wigan Athletic Heritage Project works on preserving club history and oral-history material, which is a sensible place to look for first-hand accounts.
