For some people, tickling becomes sexually arousing because it takes on personal and social meaning within their sexual interests. That is a documented experience, not a settled explanation. The most direct study, a 2024 exploratory online survey, shows that some respondents associate tickling with sexual interest and satisfaction. It does not show how common this is in the general population, why the interest develops, or what the body is doing when it happens.
What the 2024 survey found, and what it cannot show
The clearest evidence comes from Sarah Dagher and Shimpei Ishiyama’s paper “Tickle fetishism: pleasure beyond playfulness,” published in Frontiers in Psychology on 3 April 2024 (read the paper). The authors recruited through social media and tickle-fetish influencers. A total of 719 people agreed to take part, and the survey was offered in English and Japanese. Respondents described sexual associations with tickling, and some considered it a sexual activity or a source of sexual satisfaction.
These are self-reports from a self-selected group. People who follow tickle-fetish content and choose to respond are not a random sample, so the survey cannot tell us what share of the general public feels this way. Any percentages in the paper describe those respondents only and should not be read as rates for people in general.
The paper also reports respondents’ accounts of childhood experiences and media exposure. Those accounts point to questions worth studying, but they do not show that early tickling or exposure to tickling content causes an adult sexual interest. Being ticklish, likewise, does not mean a person will find tickling arousing.

Two kinds of tickling
Tickling is not one uniform sensation. The paper separates two types, and the distinction is useful for describing how different people experience it.

Because people react differently, a single label cannot capture every experience. Laughter and movement do not tell an observer whether someone is enjoying the interaction or wants it to continue.

Possible factors behind the variation
The paper discusses several factors that may matter differently from one person to another. None of them is established as a universal cause, but together they give a framework for thinking about why the same touch can feel very different to different people.
- The sensation itself. The balance between gargalesis and knismesis, and how intense or pleasurable a particular touch feels to the person receiving it.
- Anticipation and unpredictability. Not knowing when or where touch will come can change how the sensation is experienced.
- Play and shared social context. The meaning the people involved give the interaction, including whether it is playful, romantic, or sexual.
- Personal associations and power dynamics. The authors discuss links with vulnerability, excitement, and some BDSM contexts. These are discussed as possibilities, not as proven causes.
Treat this list as a way to organise questions, not as a model that explains every case.

Why you usually cannot tickle yourself
Readers often ask this alongside the arousal question, and the answer comes from a different line of work. G. Claxton’s 1975 experiment, “Why can’t we tickle ourselves?”, published in Perceptual and Motor Skills (PMID 1178428; view on PubMed), found that predictability and sensorimotor feedback significantly affected how strong a tickle was perceived to be. That helps explain why touch from another person often feels different from touching oneself.
The experiment did not study sexual arousal. It can help explain the sensation of being tickled, but it cannot explain why tickling turns some people on.

What remains unknown
The mechanism behind tickle-related arousal has not been established. The 2024 authors call for broader samples across cultural settings and for experimental studies of neural and physiological responses. Until those studies exist, claims about a specific brain pathway, a hormonal response, or a single developmental cause go beyond what the evidence supports.
Consent comes first
Tickling is touch that needs agreement, especially when it is sexual or intimate. A person may laugh, squirm, or move involuntarily while feeling uncomfortable, so those responses cannot stand in for a yes. In their 2024 review in the Annual Review of Psychology (Sexual Incentive Motivation and Sexual Behavior: The Role of Consent), Anders Ågmo and Ellen Laan write: “Consent from the partner is needed at every stage.” They also note that “The generalized social concern with sexual harassment and nonconsensual sex makes it imperative to incorporate notions of consent in any analysis of human sexual interactions.”

In practice, that means:
- Agree beforehand whether tickling is part of the interaction, and which areas and intensities are off-limits.
- Check in during the activity, not only at the start.
- Stop immediately when someone says stop or signals it, even if they were laughing a moment earlier.
- Do not treat laughter, visible arousal, or an earlier yes as permission for something new.
