Ash’s Charizard is not really shown hating him. In the anime, its early behavior is proud and disobedient, and the official episode summaries never give one stated reason for it. The relationship changes through training, and in later official material Charizard willingly rejoins Ash’s journey.
What the anime shows
The question usually comes from viewers who see Charizard ignore Ash’s commands early in the series. The official descriptions support that reading, and they also show the story moving past it.
Volcanic Panic: disobedience as a habit
The official synopsis for Volcanic Panic says Ash has to rely on his “misbehaving Charizard” in a battle. The wording treats the disobedience as an established pattern rather than a single outburst, which is why it reads as a recurring problem for Ash in the early episodes.
Charizard’s Burning Ambitions!: the training ground
The official Pokémon TV description for Charizard’s Burning Ambitions! says Ash hears about a training ground for wild Charizard and decides it is the place to hone his own Charizard’s strength. It adds: “But the tough lessons to be learned there will change Ash and Charizard’s friendship forever!” No individual speaker is named, so this should be read as the channel’s own description of the episode.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The key point is that the episode is framed as a turning point in the relationship. Ash does not simply punish or abandon Charizard; he takes it somewhere that tests its strength and forces both of them to adjust.
Later: Charizard agrees to rejoin the journey
A later official synopsis says Ash never gave up on Charizard, and that when he asks it to rejoin his journey, Charizard answers with an enthusiastic yes. That outcome is what separates the early conflict from lasting hostility. The early friction is a stage in the story, not the final state of their bond.

Why no single motive is given
The official episode descriptions describe the behavior and the relationship arc, but they do not state a motive in one sentence. They do not say that Charizard is traumatized, that it is angry about its former trainer, or that a game rule forces it to disobey. Those explanations are interpretations, and they are not established by the summaries.
Viewers who want a fuller explanation usually land on one of a few readings. Each is a plausible interpretation, not something the official text confirms:

- Pride: Charizard may simply not accept Ash as a leader it respects yet, which fits the description of it acting proud and refusing to take orders seriously.
- Earned respect: The training storyline suggests the relationship has to be built through hard experience before Charizard follows Ash willingly.
- Personality: Charizard is a strong, headstrong Pokémon, and the series treats its behavior as part of its character rather than a plot trick.
To judge which reading the episodes support, the dialogue and the actions in the scenes matter more than any summary.
The Pokédex line about anger
The official Pokémon Pokédex entry (Singapore edition) describes Charizard as a Fire/Flying type that evolves from Charmeleon. It also says: “If Charizard becomes truly angered, the flame at the tip of its tail burns in a light blue shade.”

That is a general description of the species, not a statement about Ash’s Charizard. It does not show that this Charizard’s disobedience comes from anger, and the tail flame is not a reliable indicator of how Charizard feels toward Ash. Using the Pokédex line to explain the anime plot mixes two different kinds of source: species lore and the story of one character.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check the episodes yourself
- Find Volcanic Panic and Charizard’s Burning Ambitions! on the official Pokémon TV channel, or on the service where you normally watch Pokémon episodes.
- In Volcanic Panic, note how Ash’s battle plan depends on Charizard’s behavior, and whether Charizard acts on Ash’s commands during that fight.
- In Charizard’s Burning Ambitions!, watch the training ground sequence and track each moment Charizard refuses, complies, or changes its attitude toward Ash.
- Compare the original and dubbed versions if you have access to both. Localized dialogue can change how strongly a character sounds angry, proud, or respectful, so quote the version you are watching.
Watching these sequences in order shows whether the disobedience is treated as a settled attitude or as something that changes under pressure.
