Co-creator Hayden Schlossberg says the creators settled on 15 because it was the length the ending needed, and five-episode blocks match how the show is already written. Staggering the release was meant to let the ending unfold gradually rather than arrive in one drop.
What Netflix announced
- Netflix announced on May 2, 2024 (Netflix Tudum) that the final season would be a 15-episode, three-part release. The first episodes arrived on July 18, 2024.
- Netflix’s season guide lists the completed release as one 15-episode season, not as three separate seasons.
- Five-episode grouping produces three blocks: episodes 1 to 5, episodes 6 to 10, and episodes 11 to 15.
Netflix Tudum identifies Schlossberg as a co-creator alongside Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald. The explanation below comes from Schlossberg’s interview with TV Insider’s Amanda Bell, published July 17, 2024.
Why 15 episodes, not 10 or 20
Schlossberg said the team began weighing episode counts once the show reached endgame territory after Season 5. Their options were the show’s normal order and a much longer final run:
| Option | Creators’ assessment | Consequence they described |
|---|---|---|
| 10 episodes (the show’s usual season length) | Would not be enough for the ending | Not enough room to conclude the story |
| 20 episodes | Would be too much | Probably requires two seasons and an extra year to make |
| 15 episodes (chosen) | “The right number” | Divides cleanly into three five-episode blocks |
Schlossberg’s account of the decision reads in full:

“After Season 5, we knew that we were in endgame territory, and we were talking with Netflix about how many episodes really would be left. Usually, we do 10 episodes a season, but it wouldn’t be enough. If we did 20 episodes, it would be too much and probably take an extra year to make two seasons. We just felt that 15 was the right number. As soon as we came up with that in our minds, we thought, ‘five, five, five.'”
Why five-episode batches fit the show’s writing
The split follows the show’s internal structure rather than an external schedule. Schlossberg said each season is built around five-episode character arcs, with a mid-season finale that sets up the second half:

“With every season of Cobra Kai, we write five-episode character arcs. We have these mid-season finales where big things happen that set up for the back five. So it just naturally felt like the right thing to do.”
Once 15 episodes was settled, the arc structure made three blocks of five the obvious division. Each block contains a complete arc and ends on a turn that carries into the next.

Why release in three drops instead of one
Schlossberg tied the release pattern to the ending itself. He said the creators felt that releasing the final episodes in stages would be the best way to end the series:
“…it would be the best way to end the series, not all at once in one drop on one day, but a slow tease.”

The creators’ stated rationale has two parts. First, a batch of five gives viewers a substantial binge. Second, the gaps between batches leave more story to anticipate than a single full release would.
Quick Recap
How the batches map onto the story
- Episodes 1 to 5: Closes the first arc and sets up the rest of the season, according to Zabka’s description of the stakes.
- Episodes 6 to 10: The middle block, carrying the arc into the second half of the season.
- Episodes 11 to 15: The final block. Netflix’s season guide says it follows the Sekai Taikai results, with Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai reckoning with their pasts and uncertain futures.
What the sources do and do not establish
- The rationale comes from the creators, as reported by TV Insider. It is not a documented Netflix corporate strategy.
- The reviewed coverage does not show that the split was designed to drive subscriptions or viewer retention. Any commercial motive is speculation.
- No independent audience data or external study about the split was published in the coverage reviewed. The explanation rests on the creators’ own account of their writing and pacing choices.
