Mark Harmon’s personal reason for leaving NCIS is less certain: contemporary reports said he had been ready to exit before season 19 and signed a limited one-year deal, but Harmon had not publicly explained his departure at the time. The character’s story is clear; the actor’s private motive was not publicly established.
When did Mark Harmon leave NCIS?
Harmon’s final episode as a series regular was season 19, episode 4, “Great Wide Open,” which aired October 11, 2021. The episode follows Gibbs and Timothy McGee to Alaska to investigate a serial-killer conspiracy. After they solve the case, Gibbs tells McGee, “I’m not going back, Tim.”
Gibbs is not killed off. The episode frames his choice as an open-ended departure from the team, rather than a definitive end to the character’s story.
Why did Gibbs stay in Alaska?
In the story, Gibbs tells McGee he has found a sense of peace in Alaska that he had not felt since the deaths of his wife, Shannon, and daughter, Kelly. He is not ready to give that feeling up, so he decides to remain there rather than return to Washington and the team. CBS’s episode description sets up the Alaska investigation, while contemporary coverage reported the decision he makes after the case.

What is known about Harmon’s decision to leave?
Vanity Fair reported that Harmon had been ready to leave before the nineteenth season, citing sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, and that he signed a one-year contract to appear in season 19 in a limited capacity. Vanity Fair’s account describes reported contract context, not a personal explanation from Harmon.
On October 12, 2021, Us Weekly reported that Harmon had not publicly commented on his departure at that point. The available reporting therefore does not establish a definitive personal motive. It does not support claims that he left because of a feud, health issue, or burnout, and it does not establish that he was fired.

Did NCIS leave the door open for Gibbs to return?
After “Great Wide Open” aired, executive producer and showrunner Steven D. Binder said Harmon remained an executive producer and an integral part of the show. Binder added: “So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years … never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.” The statement leaves open the possibility of a future appearance; it does not announce a return or a schedule. CBS published Binder’s statement.
