Kate Todd did not choose to leave NCIS. The actor who played her, Sasha Alexander, left after two seasons, and according to executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson she was worn down by how hard the work was. The writers then wrote the character out by killing her in the Season 2 finale, “Twilight.” The actor’s decision and the character’s death are two separate stories, and most confusion about this question comes from treating them as one.
Which “Kate” the question means
On NCIS, Kate is Caitlin “Kate” Todd, a Naval Criminal Investigative Service agent played by Sasha Alexander. Searches for “why did Kate leave NCIS” are usually asking about Alexander’s departure from the cast. Within the show’s story, the character’s exit is a different event: she is shot and killed, rather than transferred or resigning. Both questions have answers, and they come from different sources.
Why Alexander left: the workload explanation
The most direct account comes from a 2023 oral history about the series, published by The Hollywood Reporter and republished by Yahoo Entertainment. In it, Johnson recalls that during the show’s second year Alexander went to co-creator Donald P. Bellisario and said, “I love this show, but I just can’t work this hard.” Johnson describes long production hours and then adds the line that matters most for this question: “I don’t think she wanted to leave the show — she just wanted a lighter workload.”
That wording is worth reading closely. Johnson’s account describes an actor who wanted less work, not one who had decided she was finished with the series. It is also a recollection given roughly two decades after the events, so it reflects one producer’s memory rather than a contemporaneous statement from Alexander or the production.

Alexander’s later comments on the early seasons
A 2024 podcast discussion, summarized by Slashfilm, adds production context. Alexander described the early seasons as challenging, citing long hours. She also said that in those early days the cast sometimes received individual acts rather than complete scripts in advance. This is useful background on what daily work was like, but it does not name a separate reason for her departure, and it should be read as context rather than as a second explanation.

How the show wrote Kate out
Kate’s exit came in the Season 2 finale, “Twilight,” in which she is fatally shot. TV Insider’s retrospective on NCIS cast exits identifies the shooting as the season’s shocking twist.
The oral history also describes how the decision was made. Johnson recalls Bellisario proposing Kate’s death as the story choice after Alexander raised her workload concerns. He reports that Bellisario told Alexander her workload would be lighter, adding, “But you’re going to die.” Read in context, the line shows the death was the writers’ answer to how to remove a character whose actor wanted fewer hours. It was not described as a reaction to any dispute about the character’s future.

Keeping these apart prevents the most common error: reading Kate’s death as proof that Alexander was pushed out. The sources do not support that reading.

What the sources do not establish
Online speculation has sometimes suggested interpersonal conflict behind Alexander’s exit. None of the sources cited here support that claim, and this article does not treat it as a cause. The available accounts also do not rule out that Alexander had other private reasons for leaving; they simply do not describe any. The workload explanation is the only reason with on-the-record support from someone involved in the production.
Two details are not established by the material used here. The original broadcast date of “Twilight” is not given in these sources, so this article does not state one. The current streaming availability of the episode is also not covered.
