Jeremy Clarkson’s farmhouse was blown up to clear the site for a replacement home. A demolition firm carried out the blast, and Clarkson later recalled that the destruction appeared in a 2016 episode of The Grand Tour.
Why was the farmhouse demolished?
The practical reason was redevelopment. The Irish Independent reported on 10 September 2016 that Clarkson had received permission in July to demolish his five-bedroom farmhouse near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, and build a new home. The house had been rented to tenants.
The report says Clarkson hired a demolition firm to bring the farmhouse down in a large explosion. It also quoted a neighbour reacting to the rubble: “Any normal person would get in people to take it apart conventionally, but he blows it up.”
Why was the demolition shown on television?
The blast was also a spectacle for television. In a 2021 interview, The Guardian reported Clarkson’s recollection that his own farmhouse was among the things he had blown up in a 2016 episode of The Grand Tour. He was contrasting the high-impact style of his earlier television work with the gentler tone of Clarkson’s Farm.

That recollection connects the demolition to the programme, but it does not make the replacement-house plan merely a television plot: the 2016 report separately says permission had been granted to replace the farmhouse.
What is known—and what is not
- Established: the property was a five-bedroom farmhouse near Chipping Norton; permission to demolish it and build a replacement had reportedly been granted; a demolition firm razed it in an explosion; and Clarkson later recalled the event appearing on The Grand Tour.
- Not established by these accounts: the explosives used, the technical demolition plan, the filming arrangements, or how much the televised sequence was edited or enhanced.
Was this connected to Diddly Squat Farm planning disputes?
No connection is established. Later disputes about the farm shop, restaurant, parking and other Diddly Squat Farm uses concerned separate planning matters. ITV’s 2022 report and the Planning Inspectorate’s 2023 appeal decision address those later uses, not the 2016 farmhouse demolition.
