On March 18, 2025, Whoopi Goldberg and her co-hosts on ABC’s The View pressed Senator Chuck Schumer over his vote for a Republican-led funding bill. Schumer’s defense was that he had made a hard choice to avert a government shutdown, which he said would be worse. The exchange is documented in video listings, and the most-quoted lines come from a New York Post video description rather than a verified full recording of the segment.
What the March 18 segment was about
The interview was an accountability segment, not a policy briefing. Goldberg and the other hosts questioned Schumer about a vote many Democrats and their supporters found hard to accept: backing a spending bill written by Republicans. According to the New York Post’s video description, the discussion spent more time on that vote than on Schumer’s book tour for his book on antisemitism, which has since been postponed.
The exchange as it is reported
The clearest quoted exchange comes from the New York Post’s video, titled “Chuck Schumer defends funding vote amid backlash, saying shutdown would bring ‘devastation.'” Its description attributes two lines to the segment:
- Whoopi Goldberg: “Why? What were you thinking?”
- Chuck Schumer: “I knew it was a difficult choice, but I felt I had to do it.”
Those two lines are the only short quotations from Schumer and Goldberg that this article can attribute to a specific source. They are reproduced as the New York Post described them, not as checked against the full broadcast.

Schumer’s stated reasoning
Schumer’s explanation, as summarized in third-party video listings, was that he faced a choice between a smaller harm and a larger one. He argued that a shutdown would be the larger harm, and that it could let the executive branch eliminate programs. These are summaries written by the people who posted the clips, not transcript language, so they should be read as a description of his argument rather than his exact words.
The same listings describe his vote as support for a Republican-led spending bill intended to prevent a shutdown. The New York Post’s headline uses the word “devastation” for what a shutdown would bring. That word appears in the headline, and the article does not establish how much of Schumer’s argument on air it captured.

Where the sources agree and where they stop
Several details are consistent across the descriptions reviewed here, but each source covers a different layer of the story. The table below separates what each one supports from what it cannot establish.
| Source | What it supports | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| New York Post video description | The March 18, 2025 appearance; the hosts’ questioning of the vote; the Goldberg and Schumer lines quoted above | A video description, not a transcript; does not give the full exchange |
| Third-party YouTube listing | The March 2025 date; the framing of the vote as a way to prevent a shutdown; Schumer’s “smaller harm” argument | An unofficial summary; its framing is not verbatim dialogue |
| ABC program page | The View is ABC’s daytime talk show, with Whoopi Goldberg as a co-host; it covers current topics, celebrities and politicians | A general program description; it does not describe this specific episode |
| Senate Democratic Caucus transcript, September 19, 2025 | Schumer’s later arguments about different continuing-resolution votes and shutdown risk | Concerns a separate dispute; it is not evidence of what he said in March |
Keep the March and September debates separate
Schumer’s later remarks about shutdown votes, recorded in a Senate Democratic Caucus transcript dated September 19, 2025, concern a different funding fight. They help explain his broader position on shutdowns, but they do not describe the March 18 conversation on The View, and they should not be used to reconstruct what he said on that day.

What is not established
- The full wording of Goldberg’s questions and Schumer’s answers beyond the short lines quoted above.
- Whether the hosts raised other points, such as who bore responsibility for a possible shutdown, and how Schumer answered them.
- Any official statement from ABC or Schumer’s office on the segment.
- Any independent check of the claim that a shutdown would allow the executive branch to eliminate programs.
Checking the segment yourself
To verify the exchange, search ABC’s The View episode listings for March 18, 2025, and compare any full recording you find against the quotations above. If you can find the segment, the most reliable approach is to note the exact wording and timestamps, then judge Schumer’s argument on those words rather than on summaries or headlines.
Until a full recording or official transcript is confirmed, the most defensible reading is narrow: on March 18, 2025, the hosts of The View pressed Schumer over a funding vote, and he defended it as a difficult choice made to avoid a shutdown he said would be worse.
