The clip that drew attention happened during a long, lopsided hug on The View, not a collapse. Whoopi Goldberg hugged back at first, then let her arms hang loosely while co-host Sara Haines held on, according to TheWrap’s report on the April 15, 2024 episode.
What happened on the April 15, 2024 episode
The moment came during Monday’s episode of The View, which aired April 15, 2024. The panel was talking about country singer Jelly Roll and his habit of hugging people. Goldberg introduced the topic and turned to Haines with a question. Haines answered “Come here,” stood up, and hugged her.

Goldberg returned the hug at first. As Haines rocked her in a long squeeze, Goldberg winced and let her arms drop. When Haines released her, she said, “It’s my love language!”
Why “goes limp” is a headline image, not a medical event
The phrase “goes limp” describes Goldberg’s body language on screen. TheWrap’s report, written by Andi Ortiz and published the same day, does not describe a faint, a fall, an injury, or any health concern. Nothing in the coverage supports reading the clip as a collapse.
#1 Best Overall
What the moment does show is a visible mismatch: one co-host treating a hug as affection, and the other looking uncomfortable as it went on. Sunny Hostin is quoted in the same report saying her father “still talks about” Haines’ hugs, which points to the bit being a running part of the show’s personalities rather than a one-off stunt.
Who said what
- Sara Haines: “Come here.” (invitation before the hug)
- Sara Haines: “It’s my love language!” (after releasing Goldberg)
- Sunny Hostin, as quoted in the report: her father “still talks about” Haines’ hugs.
The coverage includes these on-air remarks but no formal statement from ABC about the segment.

The moment is a brief, light talk-show exchange. Haines’ hug was prolonged, Goldberg’s reaction was visibly reluctant, and the segment was a lighthearted bit about a guest’s personal style of affection. It does not involve a health incident or a formal network response.
