Walton Goggins said he initially didn’t understand why people were comparing him to the Grinch. The resemblance clicked only after he put on the full costume and makeup for Walmart’s 2025 holiday campaign. A prosthetic over his nose, he said, helped him find his version of the character.
Why people compared Walton Goggins to the Grinch
Goggins told People that he had been hearing the question “Walton Goggins as the Grinch?” over the preceding year. The comparisons circulated while attention around his role in The White Lotus was high; the People report says they seemed to gain momentum after he posed in a Speedo for a Cultured magazine cover. The report does not identify a single origin or quantify how widespread the comparisons were.
Walmart’s creative team noticed the online chatter, too. In an interview transcript, Walmart VP of Creative David Hartman said the resemblance was part of the campaign’s origin story. That is the campaign team’s account, rather than a measurement of how many people made the comparison.
What changed when he put on the Grinch makeup
Once Goggins saw himself in the full costume, the comparison made sense to him. “I thought, ‘You know what? Okay, I do kind of look like the Grinch,’” he told People.

The makeup also gave him a way into the role. “As soon as they put that on, I knew exactly who my Grinch was,” he said of the prosthetic over his nose. He experimented with the character’s walk and voice rather than simply treating the costume as the whole performance.
Goggins described his take as “just a little annoyed,” while also calling the Grinch a hero in the advertisement. He said his initial excitement about playing such a familiar character gave way to anxiety about how to do it well, before the experience became one he enjoyed.

How Goggins’s Grinch fits Walmart’s 2025 campaign
Walmart cast Goggins as the Grinch in its “Who Knew?” holiday campaign. Set in WhoKnewVille, the advertisement pairs him with Mindy Lou Who as they work around Black Friday deals. The campaign also gives the Grinch a matcha-drinking detail, including a gag involving Max the dog.
Hartman said Walmart wanted the campaign to present the retailer as a place for things people want as well as things they need. His remarks explain the campaign’s positioning; they are not independent verification of Walmart’s promotional claims.

What the comparison does—and doesn’t—tell us
Goggins’s story is about a resemblance that became clearer to him in costume, not proof that the internet had reached a universal verdict. The available account offers no platform-by-platform analysis, count of posts, makeup application time, or production credits for the prosthetic. What it does establish is the sequence: he heard the comparison, did not initially see it, then found his character after the makeup went on.
