WWE did not confirm that The Rock was on the phone with Randy Orton on Raw. After Orton betrayed Cody Rhodes and took a mysterious call, some fans and wrestling commentators floated The Rock as a possible caller—but WWE’s own explainer treated the identity as unresolved and listed several alternatives.
What happened before the mystery call?
In a March 20, 2026 article, WWE said Randy Orton betrayed his longtime friend Cody Rhodes during a WrestleMania 42 contract signing on SmackDown, then took part in a mysterious phone conversation on Raw. WWE’s account left the caller unidentified. Orton was heard saying “appreciated you doing this” and “I’ll see you soon”; the caller, WWE wrote, had reminded him “who he is, what he is, and why he did what he did.” WWE’s explainer framed the central question as who was on the phone.
Why did viewers suspect The Rock?
One clue was Orton’s later reference to “more than one Royal Family.” WWE discussed the line alongside the possibility of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, whose recent role in Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania storylines made him a plausible name to consider. But the clue did not establish who the caller was, and WWE’s article did not present The Rock as a confirmed answer.
The theory also surfaced in wrestling commentary. On March 18, Wrestling Inc. reported that Bully Ray and Dave LaGreca discussed possible identities including Orton’s father, “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Batista, Triple H, Ric Flair and The Rock. Bully Ray argued for considering The Rock, but that was pundit speculation, not confirmation from WWE. Wrestling Inc.’s report captured the range of names being discussed.

Who else could have been calling?
WWE’s list included several possibilities rather than a reveal:
- “Cowboy” Bob Orton: WWE described Randy’s father as the most logical possibility on its list.
- The Rock: A plausible theory given his connection to Cody Rhodes’ recent WrestleMania stories, but not confirmed by the article.
- Kevin Owens: Another name WWE raised as a possibility.
- Other wildcards: WWE also left room for alternatives beyond those named possibilities.
The competing names matter: the conversation’s clues invited interpretation, but the available WWE account did not settle the mystery.

What did later reports say about The Rock theory?
Coverage published later in March and early April showed disagreement rather than a definitive answer. WhatCulture reported on March 31 that Dave Alvarez argued the caller “has to be The Rock,” while Dave Meltzer disputed that theory and said WWE sources indicated the caller was not The Rock. The same report noted that only a small group of WWE executives might know the storyline answer, so backstage speculation was not conclusive. WhatCulture’s report therefore offered competing claims, not an official identification.
On April 3, WrestleTalk described The Rock, Bob Orton and Ric Flair as names circulating among fans and reported that the identity had not yet been revealed in its coverage. That account likewise did not confirm The Rock as the caller. WrestleTalk’s update reflects how the question remained open in the reporting available at that time.

Were fans really “convinced”?
“Fans convinced” describes a reaction reported in wrestling coverage, not a measured consensus. The cited reports provide examples of fan and commentator speculation, but no poll, audience count or survey showing how many viewers believed The Rock was involved. The careful takeaway is that The Rock became one prominent theory—not that most fans were proven to believe it.
