Cheng Pei-pei, the Hong Kong actor known internationally as Jade Fox in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, died on July 17, 2024, at age 78. Her family said she had a rare neurodegenerative condition and had chosen to donate her brain for medical research.
What Cheng Pei-pei’s family said about her death
In an announcement reported at the time, Cheng’s family described her illness as neurodegenerative atypical parkinsonism syndrome. They said treatment could not slow its progression and that Cheng chose to donate her brain for research. These details were attributed to her family in contemporaneous reporting, rather than established through publicly cited medical documentation.
From Hong Kong wuxia films to international recognition
Come Drink With Me and her early action roles
Cheng’s career was rooted in Hong Kong martial arts cinema and the wuxia tradition. The Guardian’s obituary identifies her role in the 1966 film Come Drink With Me as an early career-defining performance. It also recounts her refusal to accept gendered limits on action performance while making the 1968 sequel Golden Swallow.
Obituaries have described Cheng as a pioneer and an early female action star. Claims that she was the first female action star, however, are contested and should not be treated as settled fact.

Jade Fox in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
For many international viewers, Cheng was best known as Jade Fox in Ang Lee’s 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The role brought renewed attention to an actor whose work in martial arts cinema began decades earlier.
How Cheng described herself as a performer
Cheng resisted being defined solely as a martial arts performer. As quoted by the Guardian from an interview with Kung Fu magazine, she said: “I have never considered myself a martial arts lady, I’m really a dancer. I tell my children that it’s a bonus to be a dancer because you are graceful, can kick high, bend low.”
