Scream VI gives its returning survivors a new city and keeps the franchise’s self-aware slasher formula. The result has a strong stalking set piece and enough energy to keep the series moving, but its New York setting and familiar plotting do not consistently make the film feel new. Whether it is worth watching depends on how much you enjoy the franchise’s commentary and bloody set pieces.
What is Scream VI about?
After surviving the recent Ghostface killings in Woodsboro, four characters try to start over in New York City. Ghostface follows them, shifting the series from a familiar small-town setting to a crowded, anonymous city. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film; James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick wrote it, based on characters created by Kevin Williamson.
The returning cast includes Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere and Courteney Cox. At 123 minutes, it gives the survivors’ next chapter room for several extended encounters with Ghostface.
Does New York make the film scarier?
The city offers a promising change: crowds, transit and unfamiliar streets can make it difficult to know who is watching or where danger might emerge. The subway sequence makes especially effective use of that uncertainty, turning a public ride into a stalking set piece.

But a bigger setting does not automatically create a more distinctive atmosphere. In his Associated Press review, Mark Kennedy argued that the filmmakers did not use enough of New York’s potential; at times, the city makes Ghostface seem ordinary rather than threatening. The setting supplies an occasional jolt, but it does not consistently become a character in the story.
Do the meta jokes still work?
Self-commentary remains central to the series. The film opens with a film-professor sequence and eventually brings its characters to a disused theater for a climactic fight, keeping horror conventions and the franchise’s own history in view. Kennedy described the approach this way: “The sequel sticks with the formula of folding in on itself, mocking in a meta way the horror conventions it itself helped build.”

That self-awareness is part of Scream VI’s personality, but it also exposes the limits of its formula. Jokes about horror rules can sharpen a scene; they cannot, by themselves, make familiar character beats or plot turns feel fresh. The film is liveliest when its commentary accompanies suspense rather than standing in for it.
Is Scream VI worth watching?
If you want another entry built around the returning survivors, Ghostface stalking and the series’ knowing relationship with slasher conventions, Scream VI delivers those essentials. Its best moments make practical use of the urban setting, and the subway sequence shows how a crowded place can heighten danger. The less successful stretches lean on recognizable franchise machinery without giving New York or the characters enough distinctiveness to match the change of location.

Kennedy rated the film two and a half stars out of four, one critic’s assessment rather than a measure of critical consensus. The film received an R rating for strong bloody violence and language throughout, plus brief drug use. Viewers looking for a documentary or a realistic account of crime should note that this is a fictional slasher film.
