Henry Cavill did appear as a Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine, but that cameo did not announce him as the MCU’s continuing Wolverine. Director Shawn Levy called the character the “Cavillrine” and described the appearance as a playful surprise. The sources cited here contain no official announcement naming Cavill for the ongoing role.
Was Henry Cavill in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Yes. Cavill appears briefly as a Wolverine variant in the 2024 film. The nickname “Cavillrine” combines Cavill’s name with Wolverine’s familiar “-rine” shorthand; it identifies the cameo, not a new official character title or a casting announcement.
In an August 2024 interview, director Shawn Levy said Cavill agreed quickly because the appearance could be “subversive and playful.” Levy also described it as affectionate toward Cavill’s body of work and a way to play with his legacy as a DC hero now appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero. ComicBook.com’s interview with Levy gives his explanation.
Does the cameo mean Cavill is the MCU’s main Wolverine?
No. The cameo establishes that Cavill played a Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine; it does not establish that Marvel has cast him as the principal Wolverine for future MCU stories. No official announcement naming Cavill for that continuing role appears in the sources cited here.

The distinction matters because a multiverse variant can appear in a story without replacing the character’s established or future lead actor. Disney’s July 2024 interview described Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine and discussed Marvel’s renewed access to X-Men characters following Disney’s acquisition of Fox. It did not announce Cavill as a successor. Disney’s interview with Kevin Feige provides that film context.
Where did the Henry Cavill Wolverine casting rumor come from?
The 2020 Captain Marvel 2 rumor
In February 2020, ComicBook.com reported an online rumor that Marvel was considering Cavill for Wolverine and that he might appear in Captain Marvel 2. The outlet said at the time that Cavill had not been approached for a Marvel role. That was a report about a specific rumor in 2020, not evidence of his status years later—and it should not be treated as the source or confirmation of the 2024 cameo. The 2020 report documents what was claimed and what the outlet said then.

Online speculation before the film
Discussion of Cavill playing a Wolverine variant circulated before Deadpool & Wolverine opened in 2024. The meaningful confirmation came afterward: Levy explained how the surprise casting happened. The cameo made the variant speculation real, but it did not validate the separate claim that Cavill had been selected as the MCU’s primary Wolverine.
What has Marvel said about its future X-Men film?
In a 2025 interview, Marvel president Kevin Feige said a new X-Men film was in development and that its script was underway. He declined to discuss the character lineup. Those remarks confirm development at the time of the interview, not the identity of a Wolverine actor. GamesRadar+’s interview coverage reports what he did and did not disclose.

Did Cavill previously say he wanted to play Wolverine?
Not in the cited comment. In a 2021 discussion about hypothetical Marvel roles, Cavill said he would not name a character already played by someone else, then singled out Captain Britain as a role he would find fun to modernize. That was not a Wolverine casting statement and does not indicate that he was in talks for the part. ComicBook.com recounts the comment in its coverage of the Cavill cameo and Levy interview.
