Spoilers: This guide covers plot and world details from both Rebel Moon films, including the royal-family coup and characters’ histories. Netflix’s official companion guide warns that major spoilers follow.
Rebel Moon is set in a far-flung realm shaped by an empire’s hunger for resources, a royal assassination, and the resistance movements that grow in its wake. Understanding the story means distinguishing its political center, Motherworld, from Moa, the throne world; following the wheat trade that brings the Imperium to Veldt; and recognizing how faith, machines, and local customs shape the worlds Kora visits. The terms below follow Netflix’s official companion guide; details may differ between the theatrical releases and the expanded director’s cuts.

What is the Imperium?
The Imperium is the decaying, resource-hungry regime whose forces reach beyond its political center to demand supplies from other worlds. It is not a planet: it is the power ruling over many places, with Motherworld at its heart and Moa identified separately as its throne world. Its reach is enforced by military force and by arrangements with local authorities and businesses.
The official guide describes the Imperium’s appetite for worlds and resources through the creation myth of Wolf and Wurm, figures depicted on Jimmy armor. Their endless cycle of hunger and hunting echoes the regime’s expansion. That is the guide’s stated connection between myth and empire, rather than a separate account of the myth’s full theology.

What is Motherworld, and how is it different from Moa?
Motherworld is the center of Imperium power, described as lying at the heart of the regime in a system with twin suns. Moa is the Imperium’s throne world. Netflix’s guide names them separately; they should not be treated as interchangeable names for the same place. Kora was born on Moa, as was Admiral Atticus Noble, who comes from a noble Motherworld family.
Motherworld’s military and cultural institutions are part of its influence across the realm. Its elite Academy Militarium trains military personnel; Kora and Noble both attended. Kora’s offworld origin was kept secret there, a detail that sits alongside her later service to the royal family.
Who was Princess Issa, and why was there a coup?
Issa was the royal heir, daughter of the last king of the old kingdom. Her birth changed her father’s outlook: he began turning toward a more peaceful relationship with the galaxy. That shift alarmed members of the ruling class, and military hero turned politician Balisarius led a coalition that overthrew the royal family.
The official guide says the story resumes five years after the royal assassination. Balisarius has become Regent, and the regime’s pursuit of rebels is led by Admiral Noble aboard the dreadnought King’s Gaze.

Issa as the Chalice
Issa is more than a royal successor to her followers. The faithful call her the Chalice, Redeemer, and Lifesaver, and believe she may bring peace and compassion. That devotion makes her a religious figure as well as a political threat to those who benefited from the old order.
The official figures behind the old kingdom
The companion guide gives the old royal succession as 1,886 kings in unbroken succession. It also gives the king’s words on Sharaan: “Our civilization has lived and thrived for 10,000 years with honor and charity as our most valued tenets.” This is dialogue attributed to the fictional King Levitica, not a real-world historical claim.
Why does Veldt matter?
Veldt is a moon orbiting the gas planet Mara. Its main commerce is wheat, which serves both as food and as a trade good. When the Imperium imposes a tithe on the settlement, its demand threatens the community’s means of survival. Farmer Gunnar’s sale of surplus wheat to the Bloodaxes helps expose Veldt to the Imperium and sets the immediate conflict in motion.
The film’s opening crisis is therefore tied to more than a single shipment: an imperial demand collides with a small settlement’s local economy and with a rebellion already resisting Motherworld. Netflix’s official synopsis also frames the conflict around the Imperium’s threat to Veldt’s farming community.
Rank #3
Where does Kora recruit allies?
Kora, a former royal bodyguard living on Veldt, sets out to find fighters who can defend the settlement. The worlds and settlements in that journey have distinct economies and histories; they are not simply interchangeable stops. The companion guide describes the following places:
| Place | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Veldt | A moon orbiting Mara; wheat is its main commerce. | The farming settlement faces the Imperium’s tithe. |
| Mara | The gas planet orbited by Veldt. | Establishes Veldt’s place in its planetary system. |
| Providence | A port city about two days from Kora’s village, where goods and services are traded. | Shows the commercial frontier near Veldt. |
| Neu-Wodi | Arid country of scattered settlements and ranches. | Tarak is indentured there to Hickman. |
| Samandrai | Tarak’s homeworld. | He was its crown prince before his life on Neu-Wodi. |
| Daggus | A barren industrial planet that mines cobalt and depends on imported resources. | Its extractive economy includes accommodation with the Imperium. |
| Pollux and Castor | Twin moons: Pollux is associated with rundown gladiatorial combat, while Castor attracts the wealthy. | Their contrast shows different social worlds within one planetary pair. |
| Sharaan | A civilization whose stated code values honor and charity. | Its king gives the Bloodaxes refuge before Noble attacks. The guide dates Sharaanic civilization to over 10,000 years ago. |
| Shasu | Home of the Wilderfolk, with cultural ties to Sharaan. | It is part of the Bloodaxe siblings’ heritage. |
| Gondival | An industrial way station floating above a low-orbiting moon. | The rebels confront Noble there in the first film. |
Who are Kora and the people she recruits?
Kora, also called Arthelais
Kora is an offworlder whose family was killed by Motherworld. Balisarius adopted and trained her, then renamed her Arthelais. She served as Royal Seneschal and as Issa’s bodyguard before escaping to Veldt. Her history connects the regime’s violence, the royal household, and the rebellion she later joins.
Gunnar and Kai
Gunnar is a Veldt farmer who joins Kora. His sale of surplus wheat to the Bloodaxes helps bring the Imperium’s attention to the settlement. Kai is a smuggler and pilot of a Tawau-class freighter; his homeworld, Saaldorun, was razed by Motherworld.
Tarak, Hickman, and the Bennu
Tarak is indentured to rancher Hickman on Neu-Wodi, but he was once crown prince of Samandrai. Hickman says Tarak owes 300,000 darams, the coin of the realm. To gain freedom from the debt, Tarak must break a giant griffin-like creature called a Bennu, which Hickman owns.

Nemesis and General Titus
Nemesis is a swordswoman from Byeol. Mechanized prosthetic gauntlets allow her to wield ancestral swords made of oracle steel; Netflix’s production article also describes her blades as heated. General Titus is a former Motherworld general exiled after he disobeyed an order to fire on Sarawu’s rebellious parliament.
The Bloodaxes and Milius
Devra and Darrian Bloodaxe are insurgent siblings fighting Motherworld. Their heritage links a noble family of Moa with the Wilderfolk of Shasu. Milius is a refugee and resistance fighter liberated from an Imperium labor camp.
Hawksaws
Hawksaws are the realm’s bounty hunters. Their role reflects the presence of freelance hunters alongside the Imperium’s formal military forces.

The Jimmys are mechanized bodyguards created to protect the royal bloodline and await Issa. The official companion guide says there were 12 centuries ago, before their numbers later grew into the thousands. After the royal family died, they laid down their arms; some were repurposed for labor.

JC-1435 is Jimmy’s designation in the companion guide. Netflix’s announcement uses the spelling JC1435 when describing him as an “impossibly sentient” mechanized battle robot and former defender of the slain king. The films and official materials connect the Jimmys’ story to the lost royal family; the guide’s account of their original protective purpose should not be mistaken for an explanation of every machine’s individual history.
How do religion, records, and machines work in this world?
Priests, scribes, and pages
Priests are keepers of Motherworld’s knowledge and religion, which is tied to a data-focused faith. Scribes preserve and transfer records into prepared human beings known as pages. In the story’s fictional technology, a page’s DNA carries a library of recorded history; this is an in-world concept, not a real-world technology claim.
The Bone Staff and the New Imperium font
Noble carries a Bone Staff, a holy relic purportedly from Motherworld’s first kings. He wields it as an instrument of control and violence. Netflix identifies the inscription on the staff as being written in the New Imperium font; the available guide does not provide a verified translation.
Wolf and Wurm
Wolf and Wurm are intertwined figures in Motherworld’s creation myth, depicted on Jimmy armor. Netflix’s guide links their endless cycle of hunger and hunting to the Imperium’s appetite for worlds and resources.

What are the important creatures?
The Bennu
The Bennu is Hickman’s giant griffin-like creature on Neu-Wodi. Tarak has to break it as part of his attempt to escape the debt Hickman claims he owes.
Harmada and the Ogumo
Harmada is one of the last Ogumo, a giant spider kind from Daggus’s underworld. The guide says mining pollution has made her offspring unviable, connecting an industrial cost on Daggus to the decline of a creature that lives there.
What do the Imperium’s ships and military terms mean?
- Dreadnought: A flagship destroyer and troop carrier. Noble commands the King’s Gaze.
- Drop ship: A troop transport that carries forces to a planet’s surface and fires around the landing area.
- Academy Militarium: The elite school for Motherworld’s military forces, attended by both Kora and Noble.
- Regent: Balisarius’s position after the coup; he rules following the royal assassination.
- Darams: The coin used in the realm, including in Hickman’s stated debt claim against Tarak.
Which version of Rebel Moon includes these details?
Netflix lists the original films as Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver. The expanded director’s cuts are titled Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon — Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. Netflix’s sequel guide says the director’s cuts contain more creatures, history, and action. A detail tied to an expanded scene should therefore be attributed to the relevant chapter rather than assumed to appear in every version.
Quick Recap
The official companion guide presents the films’ connected political, religious, and local histories, but it is not a claim to cover every detail in all tie-in books, comics, or cuts. Zack Snyder, the films’ director and co-writer, described his interest in the setting’s banners, flags, swatches, and lettering: “What it all means and making sure all the lettering is correct.” The visual systems and invented languages and alphabets are part of the setting’s worldbuilding, rather than a promise that every inscription has a published translation.
