Thirteen Ghosts’ Black Zodiac consists of twelve trapped spirits, each tied to a human death story. The film’s central ritual also requires a living thirteenth participant, but that person is not one of the twelve ghosts. The biographies below come from the film’s production notes: they explain the designs, but the notes say these histories are not described in the finished movie.

What the Black Zodiac means in Thirteen Ghosts

The 2001 horror film frames its elaborate glass-and-steel house as a machine built around twelve imprisoned ghosts. In the production notes, their release supplies energy to open the Ocularis, also called the Eye of Hell. The Arcanum is the manuscript containing the house’s blueprint and inscriptions used to contain the spirits. Rings in the Ocularis room represent the Black Zodiac, with a symbol for each captive ghost.

That makes the title’s “thirteen” easy to misread: the Black Zodiac names the twelve ghosts, while the ritual’s living participant is separate. The film supplies the house-and-ritual framework; the fuller identities and death histories below are supplementary production lore, not necessarily information viewers hear in the movie. The film’s production notes describe the backstories as background used to guide director Steve Beck and the effects team.

Who are all twelve ghosts?

Each entry pairs a Black Zodiac name with the identity and death described in the production notes, plus the visual clue associated with that story. These are fictional character histories, not real cases.

1. The First Born Son — Billy Michaels

Billy was a seven-year-old cowboy fan who died in a bow-and-arrow accident while playing Cowboys and Indians. The arrow lodged through his forehead remains the clearest clue to how he died.

2. The Torso — Jimmy “The Gambler” Gambino

Jimmy lost a major wager to a mob-connected opponent and ran rather than pay. He was killed and dismembered; the production notes describe his remains wrapped in cellophane, the feature reflected in his ghostly appearance.

3. The Bound Woman — Susan LeGrow

Susan, a popular cheerleader and prom queen, was found strangled and buried beneath the football field after an after-prom party. The notes do not settle exactly what happened that night.

4. The Withered Lover — Jean Kriticos

Jean was Arthur’s wife and the children’s mother. She died in a fire while trying to save her children; her burns and hospital gown carry that history into her ghost design.

5. The Torn Prince — Royce Clayton

Royce was a high-school baseball star who died in a 1953 drag-racing crash after failing to brake in time. His damaged face and body evoke the wreck.

6. The Angry Princess — Dana Newman

The production notes describe Dana as preoccupied with beauty and perfection. She died by suicide after self-harm; her story is the background to the ghost’s appearance.

7. The Pilgrimess — Isabella Smith

Isabella was an English immigrant in the New England colonies in 1675. Ostracized and accused of witchcraft by a preacher, she was sentenced to death in the stocks.

8. The Great Child — Harold

Harold was Margaret Shelburne’s unusually large son, raised to help take revenge on the lumberjacks who had imprisoned her. He joined her revenge, and both were killed by a mob. His story is bound to his mother’s, the Dire Mother.

9. The Dire Mother — Margaret Shelburne

Margaret, a very short woman, was imprisoned and exploited by lumberjacks. She had Harold with Jimbo and raised him as her protector. The production notes pair her history with Harold’s rather than treating their stories as unrelated.

10. The Hammer — George Markley

George was a blacksmith wrongly accused of theft and driven from town. He murdered ten people in revenge, then was captured and killed by townspeople, who drove nails into his body and mutilated his hands.

11. The Jackal — Ryan Kuhn

Ryan was a patient at Borehamwood Asylum, held for violent attacks on women. After years in restraints and a fire in his asylum wing, he fled rescuers rather than accept their touch and died.

12. The Juggernaut — Horace “Breaker” Mahoney

Horace was a large serial killer who abducted stranded motorists to his junkyard and killed them. Police shot him after tracking him down.

Why the ghosts look the way they do

The designs turn each character’s death or history into a visible clue: Billy’s arrow, Jean’s burns, Royce’s crash injuries, and George’s mutilated hands, for example. Other designs point to the circumstances surrounding a character, such as Susan’s binding or Ryan’s history in restraints. This is how the production notes connect the human stories to the visual effects; it does not mean the finished film narrates every biography.

Director Steve Beck described the spirits as “the great white sharks of ghosts.” He also said that, while contained in the house, they behave like wild animals: “They’re extremely vicious and aggressive, and so when contained, as they are in the house, they behave as any kind of wild beast would – they become very agitated and angry.”

What the film’s official listing confirms

Sony Pictures Japan lists Thirteen Ghosts as a 2001 horror/mystery film directed by Steve Beck. Its Japanese-market DVD listing gives an approximately 91-minute runtime and includes a “ghost introduction” feature among the extras. That confirms an official supplementary introduction exists on that listed edition; it does not establish that the same extra appears on every regional release or that the DVD is currently available everywhere. Sony Pictures Japan’s film listing also presents regional digital options, whose availability should not be assumed outside that market.
