Nuremberg has a compelling subject and strong performances, but its focus on psychiatrist Douglas Kelley and Hermann Göring competes with the larger story of the Allied prosecution. That tension gives the film its most interesting question—and keeps its courtroom drama from fully resolving what it wants to say.
What is Nuremberg about?
Written and directed by James Vanderbilt, Nuremberg follows US Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley as he assesses imprisoned Nazi leaders after World War II. His interviews with Hermann Göring become the film’s central psychological contest, while Justice Robert H. Jackson works to build the case for prosecuting the Nazi leadership. The film is based on Jack El-Hai’s nonfiction book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. Sony Pictures Classics’ official film page describes the story through Kelley’s encounter with Göring and the effort to bring Nazi leaders to trial.
Russell Crowe plays Göring, Rami Malek plays Kelley, and Michael Shannon plays Jackson. Leo Woodall plays Howie Triest; the supporting cast includes Richard E. Grant, John Slattery and Colin Hanks, according to the Associated Press review.
Does the courtroom story work alongside the prison drama?
The film’s strongest dramatic material is the uneasy exchange between Kelley and Göring: a psychiatrist trying to understand a prisoner who is also a practiced political operator. But Kelley’s interviews are only one part of a vast legal undertaking. The story also wants to show Jackson and the Allies constructing a prosecution, and the shift between these scales can feel less like two parts of one argument than competing storylines.

That imbalance matters because the film’s apparent purpose is larger than a battle of personalities. The prosecution asks how individual leaders can be held accountable through law, while Kelley’s work asks what can be learned from the people who committed or enabled immense crimes. When the film centers Kelley, it makes the trial’s institutional work seem to orbit his personal encounter with Göring. The BFI Sight and Sound review by Anton Bitel identifies a historical consequence of that choice: Kelley appears more essential to the trial’s workings and outcome than he actually was.
The film’s formal and moral tensions are also reflected in the AP review by Lindsey Bahr, which finds the subject’s moral terrain compelling but says the film does not fully synthesize its classical storytelling with the bleak truths at its center. That is a useful way to understand the title’s charge that the drama confuses itself: its interest in psychological intimacy does not always sit comfortably beside the scale and purpose of a legal reckoning.

What do the performances and tone achieve?
Crowe and Shannon give the film force in its scenes of confrontation and institutional resolve. Bahr’s AP review highlights the film’s moral interest, while Los Angeles Times critic Katie Walsh praises Crowe and Shannon’s performances and the film’s willingness to confront its subject. Her reservations are about tonal uncertainty, additional storylines and underwritten female characters.
Those criticisms point to a larger issue of emphasis. The story has room for the Kelley–Göring relationship, Jackson’s work, the wider trial and a contemporary warning about the possibility of authoritarian politics. A film can move among those subjects, but the transitions need to clarify how they connect. Here, the competing strands can blunt the warning rather than sharpen it: the psychological drama draws attention toward two men, while the trial demands attention to a collective system of responsibility and a legal response.

Is Nuremberg historically accurate?
Nuremberg is a dramatization based on El-Hai’s nonfiction book, not a documentary account. Its focus on Kelley offers one route into the aftermath of the war, but the BFI’s historical caveat about his enlarged importance is a reminder not to mistake a dramatic central character for the person chiefly responsible for the trial’s process or outcome. The film’s dialogue and character relationships should likewise be understood as elements of a dramatized story, not documentary evidence.
The film incorporates documentary footage from Nazi concentration and prison camps that was shown at the actual trials, as noted by both BFI and AP. That material connects the drama to the historical record, but its presence does not make every surrounding scene a factual reconstruction. The distinction is especially important in a story that narrows a complex international proceeding into a character-led feature.

Is Nuremberg worth watching?
For viewers interested in postwar justice, the psychology of perpetrators and the tension between individual culpability and institutional law, the film offers weighty material and commanding performances. Its limitations are part of the experience: the prison interviews can be more compelling than the prosecution, and the film’s multiple ambitions do not always cohere. It is more rewarding as a flawed historical drama to think through than as a definitive account of how the trial worked.
The film runs 148 minutes and is rated PG-13, according to AP. Sony Pictures Classics announced a US theatrical opening of November 7, 2025; that date is a US release, not evidence of availability in other territories. Current streaming, rental and disc availability is not established by the cited sources.
