The official trailer for Those About to Die introduces Anthony Hopkins as Emperor Vespasian in a historical drama about the spectacle and business of gladiatorial competition in ancient Rome. The series is a standalone Peacock drama—not a Gladiator sequel—built around an ensemble whose lives meet at the intersection of sport, politics, and dynastic power.
What the trailer reveals
Peacock’s official trailer, uploaded June 13, 2024, presents the series as an epic drama about entertaining Rome’s masses through blood and sport. Peacock’s April 8 teaser announcement had described its setting as a corrupt, spectacle-driven world of gladiatorial competition, following people from across the Roman Empire.
Peacock put the ensemble premise this way in its April 8, 2024 announcement: “The series introduces an ensemble of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire who collide at the explosive intersection of sports, politics, and dynasties.” The focus is broader than the arena: the competition is also a business and a source of political influence.
Who does Anthony Hopkins play?
Hopkins plays Emperor Vespasian, as identified in Peacock’s trailer announcement. The role places the Roman ruler within the series’ world of spectacle, political maneuvering, and powerful families.
