Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett were co-stars on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and fans widely linked their rumored relationship to Rodrigo’s song “Drivers License” and her album SOUR. But neither artist publicly confirmed the full romantic storyline, and Rodrigo did not identify the song’s subject. The public “drama” grew from lyrics, timing and online speculation—not a verified account of a breakup or infidelity.
Why fans connected “Drivers License” to Joshua Bassett
Rodrigo and Bassett worked together on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. When Rodrigo released “Drivers License” in January 2021, listeners connected its heartbreak lyrics—and its reference to a “blonde girl”—to Bassett and fellow performer Sabrina Carpenter. The relationship and breakup behind those interpretations were never publicly confirmed in the cited coverage. TIME described the relationship as unconfirmed, while GQ characterized the immediate response as online speculation.
That distinction matters: a lyric can invite a real-world interpretation without establishing who inspired it or proving a timeline. Rodrigo declined to specify the song’s subject. In a 2021 interview with Billboard, as quoted by Vanity Fair, she said: “I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song.” She said its emotional quality was what made it resonate.
How other songs became part of the story
In January 2021, Bassett released “Lie Lie Lie,” and Carpenter released “Skin.” Some listeners cast the releases as responses to Rodrigo’s song, making them further chapters in a presumed love-triangle narrative. The timing is documented; the supposed lyrical exchanges are interpretations, not confirmation of a shared account of events. Vanity Fair also reported Bassett saying he was proud of Rodrigo’s success, and Carpenter denying that “Skin” was a diss track aimed at Rodrigo.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
None of those releases establishes that Bassett cheated, that Rodrigo’s song definitively names him or Carpenter, or that the lyrics reveal an exact relationship timeline. The public record supports a sequence of songs and comments, not a settled account of the private relationship.
What Rodrigo later said about the heartbreak behind SOUR
In the 2022 documentary Driving Home 2 U, Rodrigo discussed the emotions that informed SOUR, including having to see the person she was writing about with someone else. Entertainment Tonight reported her comments, but they did not name that person. The report’s framing connects the remarks to Bassett; the quoted comments themselves do not establish his identity as the subject.

What Bassett said about the attention
In a 2021 GQ profile, Bassett said Rodrigo had not spoken to him since “Drivers License” came out. He also described receiving threats and feeling dehumanized by the attention. Those are his statements about that period, not proof of every detail of the rumored relationship or a description of their current relationship.

Bassett released “Crisis,” “Secret” and “Set Me Free”; he described “Crisis” as addressing the publicity surrounding the situation. As with Rodrigo’s songs, his account can establish what he chose to say publicly, but it cannot independently settle all the private events fans debated. In Vanity Fair’s May 2021 account, Bassett said of the attention, “I get why people are asking about that stuff—but it doesn’t really get to me. I’m also just proud of her and the success that her song is having.” Vanity Fair attributed that remark to Bassett as quoted by BuzzFeed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is documented—and what remains rumor
- Documented: Rodrigo and Bassett were co-stars; Rodrigo released “Drivers License” in January 2021; and Bassett and Carpenter released songs that listeners discussed in connection with it.
- Artists’ own accounts: Rodrigo spoke about the emotional experience behind her music while declining to identify “Drivers License”’s subject. Bassett described the public scrutiny and addressed it in his own music.
- Unverified: The precise nature and timing of any romance or breakup, claims of infidelity, and assertions that particular lyrics definitively identify Bassett or Carpenter.
The episode shows how quickly a fan reading of lyrics can harden into an entertainment-news narrative. That attention had personal consequences: Bassett told GQ he saw violent threats and felt dehumanized by the scrutiny. It is possible to discuss why the songs prompted speculation without treating speculation as proof.

In a 2024 interview, the Associated Press quoted Rodrigo saying, “I love singing about rage.” She described songwriting as a way to express feelings that can be harder to discuss in everyday life. That broader reflection offers a grounded way to understand her work: the emotion can be personal and powerful even when the listener is not given—or is not entitled to—a definitive identity for its subject.
