“Crushed,” Season 6, Episode 7 of The Rookie, puts a missing-teen investigation alongside the emotional fallout of the Chenford breakup. The episode’s setup creates room for procedural urgency and relationship drama, but the available episode-specific evidence does not establish that it uses an unusually experimental visual format. The stronger review question is whether its shifts in tone serve the characters—or distract from them.
What happens in “Crushed”?
ABC’s The Rookie episode, listed as released April 30, 2024, follows the team as it searches for two missing teenagers and tries to uncover what happened to them. A second story has Lopez and Harper looking for the perfect nanny. Those are the official synopsis’s broad outlines; they do not establish how either plot resolves. Apple TV’s U.S. episode listing gives the runtime as 40 minutes and the rating as TV-14, with advisories for violence, suggestive dialogue, and language.
Tori Garrett directed the episode, written by Brynn Malone and Natalie Callaghan, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ episode guide. That credit detail matters when judging claims about the episode’s construction: the source that makes the strongest claim about an unusual camera approach gives conflicting credits.
Does “Crushed” use an experimental visual format?
That claim is not firmly established. A February 2025 EyesOnShow recap describes the episode as relying on bodycam and security-camera footage, and says the resulting perspective shifts can be disorienting. But its director and writer credits conflict with the episode guide, so its format description should be treated as an unconfirmed viewing impression rather than a verified production fact.

Without specific, directly observed scenes to point to, it would be misleading to declare that “Crushed” is formally experimental or that a particular camera choice makes it hard to follow. The title’s criticism is best framed as a question for viewers: do shifts in perspective clarify the investigation and deepen the tension, or do they pull attention away from the story? The evidence available here cannot settle that through production details alone.
Chenford’s breakup gives the episode its emotional center
Raquel Morales’s Fangirlish review, published May 1, 2024, reads “Crushed” as the first episode after Tim and Lucy’s breakup. Morales interprets Tim’s anger as turning inward: rather than letting Lucy choose what she wants, he pushes her away. Lucy’s response, in this reading, is a defense of her own agency.

That interpretation gives the episode a more focused emotional question than the “experimental” label: can these characters deal with pain without deciding for one another? The breakup aftermath can make the procedural case feel like more than a separate task if the investigation’s pressure leaves room for the characters’ changed dynamic. Morales’s praise is for the measured handling of that aftermath, not for spectacle.
Tamara’s independence adds a second character arc
Morales also highlights Lucy’s relationship with Tamara. Lucy offers her a home and continued support, while Tamara moves toward a future of her own. The tension is not simply whether Lucy can help; it is whether care can make space for independence rather than becoming a reason to stay dependent.

This thread complements Chenford’s conflict by giving the episode another version of a difficult boundary: support matters, but it cannot substitute for another person’s choice. It also broadens the emotional register beyond the breakup without requiring the missing-person story to carry every theme.
Do the comic beats help or interrupt?
For Morales, two comic elements—the ambulance-sex joke and Smitty’s betting subplot—interrupt the episode’s emotional emphasis. That is a fair tonal criticism to test against the episode: comic relief can make a tense drama feel more human, but a joke placed at the wrong moment can blunt a scene that needs to linger.

The nanny search offers a natural source of lighter material alongside the missing-teen investigation. The risk is not that a procedural drama contains comedy; it is that the comedy may compete with the more consequential emotional beats. On the available critical account, “Crushed” is most vulnerable when its levity feels like a detour from Chenford and Tamara rather than a contrast that sharpens them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is “Crushed” a good episode?
The most persuasive case for the episode is its attention to emotional aftermath: Morales finds the breakup writing measured, and the Tamara storyline gives Lucy’s instinct to support someone a meaningful counterpoint. The main reservation is tonal balance, particularly where the comic subplots may interrupt that focus.

Whether its visual presentation feels excessive is less certain. A later recap reports a bodycam/security-camera-only approach, but the conflicting credits make that account too weak to treat as settled fact. Viewers who find the episode disorienting may have a valid response to what they see; that reaction should not be mistaken for confirmed information about the production’s format.
For U.S. viewers, Apple TV’s listing names Disney+ and Hulu for subscription streaming and Fandango for purchase. Catalog availability and access can change, and this listing does not establish availability in other regions.
