What is The Rip about?
A team of Miami police officers finds a large sum of cash in a derelict stash house. As word of the seizure spreads and outside forces take an interest, suspicion grows among the officers themselves. The official premise sets up a contained crime thriller about loyalty and trust under pressure; the film is not presented as a documentary.
Writer-director Joe Carnahan told Time, “The devil is in the details in this film.” He also described its focus as the connections between people and what a team, friends and loved ones mean to one another.

Is The Rip based on a true story?
It is inspired by a real 2016 Miami-Dade police raid, but it is a fictionalized thriller, not an exact reenactment. Time’s account says officers found $24 million in 24 buckets in a concealed room behind a false wall at a Miami Lakes home. The raid followed a years-long investigation into a marijuana trafficking operation. Department procedure required the money to be counted at the scene, keeping officers there for hours and raising concerns that someone might be watching.
Time reports that the film changes names and other details, including the cash total: the real seizure was $24 million, while the fictional amount in the movie is $20 million. Officer Chris Casiano, recalling the real raid to Time, said: “That amount of money just does dark things to the soul.”

Who stars in The Rip?
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck lead the ensemble. Netflix’s title listing names Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, Nestor Carbonell and Lina Esco among the cast. Joe Carnahan wrote and directed the film. Artists Equity, the studio founded by Affleck and Damon, produced it; Netflix announced the project on July 2, 2024.
How long is The Rip, and what is its rating?
The Associated Press reports a runtime of 133 minutes. Netflix lists the film as R-rated; the AP review attributes the rating to violence and pervasive language. Viewers deciding whether it suits them should account for both the mature content and its just-over-two-hour running time.

Is The Rip worth watching?
One review offers a mixed but specific guide. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle gives the film two stars out of four, praising the engaging premise and atmosphere and the appeal of seeing Damon and Affleck together, while faulting hurried exposition and thin character development. That is the AP critic’s assessment, not an audience score or a measure of broader critical consensus.
The film may be a fit if you enjoy tense police crime stories, the Damon–Affleck pairing or a morally uneasy premise about a team under pressure. If carefully developed characters matter more to you than atmosphere and escalating suspicion, the AP review suggests a potential drawback.
