A 2007 report says he used steroids as he entered the University of Miami; an account attributed to his autobiography describes a short trial of an unidentified oral substance that Johnson himself said might not have been a steroid. The sources do not document steroid use during his wrestling career.
What the accounts say—and what they do not
The sources point to episodes around Johnson’s transition from high school to college, but they differ in detail and certainty. They should not be merged into a single, fully verified account: the 2004 interview records a question that presumes one trial, the 2007 report describes steroid use entering college, and a later article quotes a more uncertain autobiographical episode.
| Source and date | What it reports | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Washington Post interview, 2004 | The interviewer referred to Johnson having admitted to trying steroids once at age 19, as a college freshman. Johnson responded in favor of strong testing in baseball and athletes’ responsibility to fans. | The transcript records the question’s premise and Johnson’s answer, not a detailed account of the episode. |
| Wrestling Inc. report of a FoxSports.com interview, 2007 | The report says Johnson used steroids entering his freshman year at the University of Miami, but not as a professional wrestler. | This is a secondary report of the interview; the original FoxSports.com page was not available in the sources reviewed. |
| The Fix, 2014, quoting Johnson’s autobiography | Johnson is quoted describing a substance obtained after high school, taken daily for about three weeks, then stopped when he saw no results. | In the quoted account, Johnson says he did not know whether it was a steroid: “For all I know, I was taking Advil.” |
What Johnson said about the college-era account
In a 2004 Washington Post interview, the interviewer framed the question as an admission that Johnson had tried steroids once at 19, during his freshman year of college. Johnson’s recorded reply addressed baseball testing rather than explaining what he had taken or describing the episode in detail:
“I think baseball should implement a strong drug testing program and a really, really strong one at that because all professional athletes have a responsibility to the fans.”

What the autobiography account adds
The Fix’s 2014 article attributes a separate account to The Rock Says…. In the passage it reproduces, Johnson says that after high school and before college football, he got an oral substance through an acquaintance who said it was a steroid. He took it daily for about three weeks, noticed no results, and stopped. Johnson’s own uncertainty is central to the account: “For all I know, I was taking Advil.” The article does not establish what the substance actually was.
What is reported about his wrestling career
Wrestling Inc.’s 2007 report of a FoxSports.com interview says Johnson used steroids entering his freshman year at the University of Miami, but not as a professional wrestler. In the same report, Johnson is quoted describing his priorities when he entered wrestling:

His comments on steroid culture are not a personal admission
The Fix also reproduces comments attributed to a 2009 MTV interview in which Johnson said steroid use was less prevalent in wrestling than it had been 10 years earlier, described a permissive culture, and called for stronger penalties. Those remarks concern the industry; they do not establish that he used steroids during his wrestling career.
The Fix reproduces the comments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unverified
These accounts do not provide a verified drug name, dose, medical record, or testing result for Johnson. The autobiographical episode identifies no confirmed substance, and the 2004 transcript does not elaborate on the interviewer’s premise. The careful conclusion is limited: reporting describes a possible or reported steroid trial around college entry, while the available sources do not establish steroid use during his professional wrestling career.
