Dwayne Johnson has linked his changing physique to two roles: he said he gained just over 30 pounds to play MMA fighter Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, then described preparing for a leaner look as Chicken Man in Lizard Music. A performance-enhancing-drug explanation offered by outside commentators is speculation, not a verified account of what caused his weight change.
Why did The Rock change his physique?
Johnson’s public explanation is role preparation. In September 2025, while promoting The Smashing Machine, he said that transforming his body for the film was a “massive challenge” and that the role called for a different kind of muscle, including “real fast twitch fibers.” He said he gained just over 30 pounds to portray Kerr, the former heavyweight MMA fighter. The Daily Beast’s account of Johnson’s comments describes the role-specific demands behind that change.
That gain and the later slimmer appearance are separate stages of preparation, not one unexplained transformation. Sporting News also connected his build for Kerr to the character’s physical silhouette. Johnson’s on-screen transformation involved more than body size: Men’s Fitness reported that he spent three hours in makeup and prosthetics to portray Kerr.
What changed after The Smashing Machine?
By the Venice Film Festival in September 2025, where he was promoting The Smashing Machine, Johnson appeared slimmer. He subsequently discussed preparing for Chicken Man, an older, leaner character in the planned film Lizard Music, based on Daniel Pinkwater’s novel. Johnson joked that the next transformation meant “eating less chicken.” The Independent’s September 2025 report ties the slimmer look to that next role; Men’s Fitness quoted his target as “Clint Eastwood at 75. Sinewy muscles, he’s lean.” Forbes identifies the novel as the film’s source material.

What did the expert say—and what is actually established?
In an October 2025 report, TheWrap quoted attorney-turned-bodybuilder Anthony Hughes, who described the change as “almost certainly tied to changing or discontinuing his performance enhancing drug regimen.” The same article quoted Jay Campbell, author of The Testosterone Optimization Therapy Bible, who attributed the muscle loss to coming “off higher dose androgens and anabolics.” These are the commentators’ interpretations; the reporting does not verify that Johnson used performance-enhancing drugs or that any such change caused his appearance.
TheWrap also noted that Johnson had previously denied using performance-enhancing drugs and credited his physique to training and diet. Photographs and expert commentary do not establish a person’s drug use, regimen, or medical condition. The supported explanation from Johnson himself is that his changing appearance was connected to preparing for different characters.

Was the weight loss really 60 pounds?
That figure should not be treated as a confirmed measurement. The Independent cited other reports estimating that Johnson had lost around 60 pounds; it was not a scale figure he confirmed in the cited coverage. By contrast, his statement that he gained just over 30 pounds for The Smashing Machine was directly attributed to Johnson. The two numbers describe different claims, with different levels of sourcing, and should not be used to calculate an exact net change.

The cited coverage does not provide a verified weight-loss plan, calorie target, training schedule, or medical assessment from Johnson.
