The setup is an unmistakable nod to the 1994 film Speed, but the episode also makes room for a returning villain and the show’s ongoing character conflicts. That combination gives the hour a lively hook, even if its action premise is more effective as a source of momentum than as a tightly engineered thriller.
Spoiler note: This review discusses the premise and broad story threads, but avoids detailing the returning villain’s actions or the episode’s resolution.
What happens in “Speed”
ABC’s official synopsis sets out the central threads: “John and Celina find themselves in a hostage situation while under cover for a public safety initiative; while Angela and Nyla investigate the suspects, Tim challenges Lucy’s decision-making skills.” The episode is titled “Speed,” is rated TV-14, and has a listed runtime of 41:25. ABC lists it on March 26, 2025. ABC’s episode page
The hostage situation supplies the episode’s immediate engine, while the investigation and Tim’s challenge to Lucy create parallel sources of tension. A familiar villain’s return adds a further hook for viewers following the season, though the available episode coverage does not establish enough detail to responsibly describe that character’s specific moves or how the story resolves.

How the bus-and-bomb premise uses the film “Speed”
The title and the bus-and-bomb setup point directly to the 1994 Keanu Reeves action film: the memorable constraint is that the bus cannot stop. The episode’s premise is an overt homage, not a direct adaptation. Coverage also notes a Keanu name-check, but describes the television plot’s plan as less neat than the movie’s. That distinction matters: the reference offers an instantly legible action framework, while the episode is telling its own story within The Rookie’s police ensemble.
As a piece of spectacle, the premise is naturally propulsive. A moving vehicle and an explosive threat give the main plot a clock and a physical space in which danger can escalate. But a familiar setup comes with expectations of carefully connected rules and rising complications. The available coverage characterizes the episode as an over-the-top action story rather than establishing that every piece of its plan has the elegant logic of the film. The homage is most useful as a jolt of energy, not as a promise of a beat-for-beat remake.

A returning villain gives the action a season-long connection
The returning antagonist is the episode’s other major draw. The review coverage characterizes the character as a villain fans have been waiting all season to see again, making the reappearance feel like more than a guest turn dropped into a standalone emergency. It links “Speed” to the wider season and gives the high-concept bus plot an additional thread for returning viewers to follow.
That is the strongest supported judgment about the return: it is a notable hook, but the available coverage does not provide enough reliable scene detail to assess the villain’s exact actions or the full payoff. The episode’s appeal can be discussed without pretending those specifics are established.

The ensemble plot keeps the episode from being only an action stunt
Angela and Nyla investigate
Angela and Nyla’s investigation gives the hostage story a second point of view. Rather than leaving the episode entirely inside the crisis, this thread follows the effort to work out who is involved and what is happening. ABC confirms the investigation, though its public synopsis does not spell out the suspects’ identities or the investigators’ findings.
Tim challenges Lucy
Tim’s criticism of Lucy’s decision-making supplies a character-level conflict alongside the immediate danger. The official synopsis confirms the disagreement, but not its specific trigger or outcome. It adds friction without requiring the episode to rely solely on physical peril.

Other relationship and officer threads
Review coverage also flags the Chenford relationship and a newer officer’s problem as threads in the episode. Those themes broaden the hour beyond the hostage plot, but the accessible account does not establish their scene-by-scene details. They are best treated as supporting material rather than grounds for claims about a particular turning point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: a lively premise, with the villain’s return as the extra hook
“Speed” has a clear selling point: it borrows the urgency of a bus-and-bomb thriller, then folds that spectacle into the familiar ensemble and a season-long villain thread. The film reference is easy to recognize without mistaking the episode for a remake. Its most compelling promise is the mix of action and ongoing story; the main caveat is that the available coverage supports the broad premise and returning-villain hook, not a detailed judgment of the full resolution.
