Yes—with a qualification. In “Elven Kings Under the Sky,” Sauron and the threat surrounding the Three Elven Rings give the premiere its most compelling dramatic center. But the episode’s many concurrent storylines make that focus feel less secure than its title character deserves.
What the premiere sets in motion
Season 2, Episode 1, “Elven Kings Under the Sky,” premiered on August 29, 2024. Its official episode listing sets up Sauron bargaining with Adar, the Stranger and Nori venturing into new lands, and the Three Elven Rings facing judgment.
The question is whether those threads gather around a coherent conflict or compete for the episode’s limited space. The strongest material points toward the former: Sauron is not simply a returning antagonist, but a force whose ambitions affect the Elves’ choices and the balance of power beyond them.
Why Sauron is the premiere’s strongest presence
The most intriguing dramatic tension lies in the opposition between Sauron and Adar, alongside the uncertainty over what the Rings mean for the Elves. Sauron’s influence makes the Rings more than a spectacular object or plot device: they become a test of judgment, trust, and susceptibility to manipulation.

Amazon’s Season 2 material identifies Annatar as Sauron’s new guise and describes his offer of knowledge and help to manipulate the Elves into making more Rings. That is season-level context, not a guarantee that every part of this scheme is fully developed in Episode 1. It does, however, clarify why the premiere’s Ring storyline carries such dramatic weight.
The Adar conflict gives Sauron an immediate opponent, while his influence over the Elves points to a longer game. This combination makes him feel like the season’s organizing force even when the episode moves elsewhere. The limitation is that the motivations and relationships behind the larger conflict do not always receive enough explanation to make every turn equally legible.

Do the other storylines strengthen the episode?
The Stranger and Nori’s move into new territory opens a separate line of anticipation. The Elven and Dwarven material broadens the sense that the consequences of the Rings and Sauron’s return extend beyond one confrontation. Khazad-dûm, in particular, gives the premiere a more intimate counterweight to its grander power struggles.
Yet breadth has a cost. Each shift asks the viewer to reorient before the central conflict has fully settled. The Washington Post found the Khazad-dûm material affecting, but criticized the treatment of the orcs and said the conflict among Sauron, Adar, and Galadriel was under-explained. Those are useful cautions: the ensemble can create scale, but scale alone does not make every connection clear.

The episode is therefore more persuasive when its separate strands suggest consequences for the central struggle than when they feel like parallel obligations to check in on a large cast. For some viewers, the added scope will build anticipation; for others, the transitions will make the premiere feel diffuse.
Does the pacing pay off?
This is a setup-heavy opener rather than a self-contained story with a decisive payoff. Its plot gives the season several directions to pursue, but that breadth can leave characters and conflicts feeling lightly sketched. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page displayed an 86% Tomatometer based on 14 reviews when accessed; the score is a dated snapshot and may change. Its excerpts reflect the divide: Keith Phipps called the premiere “a pretty compelling season premiere,” while an IGN excerpt said the three-episode premiere pulls the plot in too many directions and leaves characters feeling thin.

TV Guide’s review addresses the season as a whole, not just this episode. It describes Celebrimbor’s entanglement with Sauron as a notable strength, alongside uneven character development and continuing pacing issues. That broader assessment helps explain the premiere’s promise and risk: Sauron’s schemes offer a strong engine, but the ensemble needs enough room for those schemes to land emotionally.

In an August 27, 2024 interview with TheWrap, co-showrunner Patrick McKay said, “It’s Sauron’s season, it’s a season that’s dominated by villains, a battle between two villains in Adar and Sauron.” He also described the season as “decidedly more mysterious, mistier and darker.” The premiere’s focus on Sauron and Adar supports that stated direction, but creator intent is not proof that every storyline is equally effective.

The show’s approach to Tolkien lore also benefits from some context. Amazon’s cast feature reports that Charles Edwards consulted Unfinished Tales while considering Celebrimbor’s pride and ambition. Edwards said Tolkien’s description of Celebrimbor he drew on appeared in Unfinished Tales, rather than The Silmarillion. This is background on an actor’s preparation, not a claim that the show reproduces the book’s account directly. The book is optional further reading, not required to follow the episode.
Verdict: Sauron outshines the ensemble, but the focus wavers
Sauron is the premiere’s clearest source of menace and momentum. His conflict with Adar and his influence over the Rings point toward a strong season-long spine. The other threads add scale and promise, but their number, combined with under-explained tensions and setup-oriented pacing, sometimes diffuses the impact. The premiere makes the case for Sauron as the season’s central presence more successfully than it makes every part of its ensemble equally compelling.
