For the best place to start, watch The Puffy Chair: it is both a key early feature and a clear entry point into Mark and Jay Duplass’s character-first independent filmmaking. This is an editorial ranking, not a definitive verdict. It focuses on projects the brothers jointly wrote or directed, then includes their television work and one documentary series they produced, with each credit labeled by role.

How this ranking works

The order weighs the strength of the story and performances, how distinctly each title reflects the brothers’ character-focused, improvisational sensibility, its place in their careers, and the range it adds across comedy, drama, horror, and documentary. Critical reception is a supporting signal, not the scorecard. The ranking is representative, not a complete filmography: Duplass Brothers Productions’ overview highlights selected credits rather than every project.

Mark and Jay have not held the same role on every title. The first three films below are joint writing-and-directing projects; later entries are clearly identified as television they created or a documentary series on which Mark was an executive producer. The company describes a much wider slate of producing work, including independent features and documentaries, but a producing credit alone does not mean the brothers jointly made or directed a film. Duplass Brothers Productions and the Television Academy document those distinctions.

The Duplass Brothers’ films and TV shows ranked

  1. The Puffy Chair — the essential starting point

Jointly written and produced by Mark and Jay, The Puffy Chair is the natural first stop for anyone exploring their early independent features. Its place here is less about claiming it is their most polished work than about how well it introduces the collaborative, intimate filmmaking that became central to their identity. The company and the Television Academy both identify it as an early project; the Academy records the brothers’ writing and producing credit.

  2. Cyrus — their early feature work at a turning point

Cyrus belongs near the top because it shows the brothers carrying their personal-scale approach into a later phase of their early feature work. Mark and Jay jointly wrote, directed, and produced it, according to the Television Academy. That shared authorship makes it a particularly useful companion to The Puffy Chair for viewers interested in how their filmmaking developed.

  3. Baghead — an early genre detour

Also written, directed, and produced by both brothers, Baghead brings horror into the early Duplass feature mix. Its value in the ranking is the contrast: the same collaboration behind intimate relationship stories also took on genre storytelling. The Academy confirms the brothers’ shared credits, while the company lists the film among its early collaborative features.

  4. Togetherness — the central Duplass television series

The brothers created HBO’s Togetherness, making it the clearest television counterpart to their feature work in this ranking. Its inclusion reflects the move from self-contained independent films to an ongoing format for character-led comedy and drama. The company lists it among its television projects, and the Television Academy records their work on the series.

  5. Room 104 — a broader television canvas

Mark and Jay created HBO’s Room 104, an anthology series that gives each story room to take a different shape. It ranks below Togetherness here not as a claim about quality, but because the series’ changing characters and situations make it a less direct extension of the brothers’ early feature identity. It is still an important example of their range as television creators.

  6. Wild Wild Country — a documentary credit, not a jointly directed film

This documentary series earns a place only because the ranking includes a producing sidebar beyond joint writing and directing. The Television Academy lists Mark Duplass as an executive producer on the 2018 Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series winner. That award and credit establish a meaningful connection, but they do not make Wild Wild Country a film the brothers jointly directed.

Where the broader filmography fits

The six ranked titles offer a focused path, but the company’s selected credits show that the brothers’ reach extends beyond projects they made together as writer-directors. Its feature list includes producing work on The One I Love, Tangerine, Safety Not Guaranteed, Creep and Creep 2, Biosphere, Language Lessons, The Skeleton Twins, and Jay Duplass’s The Baltimorons. Those titles should be read as company or producing credits, not assumed to be joint directing projects.

The same distinction matters in television and documentary. The company’s overview also lists Animals, Somebody Somewhere, Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn’s independently created Penelope, and the 2024 Creep franchise series The Creep Tapes. Its documentary slate includes Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off, Jason Isbell: Running with Our Eyes Closed, Not Going Quietly, Last Stop Larrimah, The Lady and the Dale, Sasquatch, Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal, and American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders. These are useful next searches for viewers following their producing work, but their individual creative relationships vary.

How ratings and awards should inform a watchlist

Aggregated ratings are snapshots, not a stable or objective ranking. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes’ Mark Duplass page showed As of Yet (2021) at 100% and also listed Not Going Quietly, Creep 2, Tangerine, and Language Lessons among his high-rated work. The Jay Duplass page showed As of Yet (2021) at 100% and listed Not Going Quietly, Tangerine, Language Lessons, and Outside In. These dynamic percentages can change and should not be mistaken for a settled judgment of the brothers’ work. See the Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass pages for their current listings.

Awards add context without answering what to watch first. The Television Academy lists two Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series nominations for Mark Duplass for The Morning Show (2020 and 2024), as well as his executive-producer credit on Wild Wild Country. Those records illustrate the range of his work; they do not change the role distinctions behind this ranking.
