In Nandini Ramnath’s December 5, 2025 review for Scroll, the film’s uneasy premise and compelling lead performance are not enough to overcome suspense that stretches too long and a mystery weakened by gaps in the investigation.
What is Stephen about?
Stephen (Gomathi Shankar) walks into a police station and confesses to killing nine women. Police officer Michael (Michael Thangadurai) doubts the confession, while psychiatrist Seema (Smruthi Venkat), assigned to interview Stephen, weighs whether he is a serial killer or a serial liar.

As Michael looks into Stephen’s girlfriend, played by Shrisha, and the missing victims, the film shifts between competing accounts and uncertainty. Its use of split screens reinforces that unstable perspective, but the central puzzle depends on the audience wanting to test Stephen’s claims against the evidence.
Why does the mystery lose momentum?
Ramnath’s main criticism is that the suspense is overstretched and ultimately unfulfilling. The film offers uncertainty about Stephen’s guilt, but she finds limited psychological insight beneath that uncertainty. The question of what happened matters less when the investigation does not build a convincing path toward an answer.

She also objects to the police investigation’s convenient omissions. As Ramnath puts it, “There are convenient gaps in the police investigation, all in aid of a sequel.” Her review singles out the lack of urgency around finding the victims’ bodies as another weakness: without that search, the stakes of the investigation feel diminished.
What works in the film?
The review finds the family scenes more memorable than the mechanics of the mystery. Stephen’s parents, played by Kuberan and Vijayshree, bring a more affecting dimension to the story, with Vijayshree’s portrayal of his mother standing out.

Ramnath also describes Gomathi Shankar as compelling in the lead role. That performance helps sustain interest in Stephen even when the film’s revelations and investigative turns do not deliver the same force.
Is Stephen worth watching?
It may suit viewers drawn to a serial-killer premise, unreliable claims and a lead character whose confession cannot simply be taken at face value. The trade-off, according to Ramnath’s review, is a mystery that prolongs suspense without sufficient psychological depth or investigative momentum. The performances—particularly Gomathi Shankar’s and Vijayshree’s—offer reasons to stay with it, but the review does not consider the final effect satisfying.

Runtime and streaming availability
Scroll reported a runtime of 123 minutes and said Stephen was available on Netflix when its review was published on December 5, 2025. That dated report does not establish current availability, which can vary by country and change over time.
