The Bachelorette is unscripted reality television, but that does not mean it is unproduced. Former lead Becca Kufrin said her words and actions were her own, and former producer Julie LaPlaca said the franchise is not scripted. The show is also shaped by casting, filming circumstances and the footage selected for broadcast. Those accounts support a distinction between written dialogue and production influence; they do not establish what happened in every scene or season.
What does “scripted” mean here?
The question is easier to answer when “scripted” is separated from “produced.” A scripted program gives performers dialogue or actions to follow in advance. A reality show can leave participants’ words and reactions unscripted while producers still choose who appears, arrange the circumstances of filming and shape what viewers see through editing.

- Written dialogue: The available firsthand accounts say the franchise is not scripted, but do not audit every scene.
- Participants’ own words and feelings: Kufrin described her own conduct as hers; that is testimony about her experience, not every contestant’s.
- Production and casting: Reporting documents deliberate choices about casting and filming conditions.
- What airs: Viewers see a selected broadcast, not the complete raw footage. The available sources do not establish the current editing workflow or how unaired material might change the context.
What former participants and producers have said
Becca Kufrin on her own words and actions
In a May 24, 2018 interview, former lead Becca Kufrin said: “For me, everything I did and said was me and I know that people think at times I’m told to say something, but it’s all me.” Her statement directly addresses her own experience; it should not be generalized into proof about every participant or season. Read Kufrin’s interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Julie LaPlaca on the franchise
Former Bachelor producer Julie LaPlaca said in a July 3, 2026 interview, “The Bachelor is not scripted. It is not. No.” That is useful franchise-insider context, but she was speaking about The Bachelor and her experience; it is not a scene-by-scene account of every Bachelorette season. How production shapes the show without proving lines are scripted
Casting for compelling television
An ABC News behind-the-scenes report from March 15, 2010 described casting intended to find people audiences would root for and against. That shows deliberate selection and characterization as production aims; it does not show contestants were assigned dialogue or acted from a script. Executive producer Martin Hilton described the show’s expectation that participants be vulnerable, saying, “If you aren’t able to be vulnerable, whether it’s to the person and therefore to the cameras, despite the cameras around you, you might as well go home.” His comment describes the environment expected of participants, not a claim that their words were written for them. Read ABC News’s 2010 behind-the-scenes report.
Filming circumstances can be controlled
ABC News reported that Clare Crawley’s 2020 season was planned around a controlled resort location and pandemic precautions. This dated example shows production determining where and under what conditions filming happened; it should not be treated as a description of current routine. The report does not establish that dialogue was scripted. Read ABC News’s report on the 2020 season.

Are contestants told what to say?
The available accounts do not settle whether prompts are used in particular scenes or for every participant. Kufrin said she was not told what to say in her own experience, while LaPlaca’s statement was a broad description of the franchise rather than documentation of every interaction. It would therefore be too strong to say that no one is ever prompted, or that contestants routinely receive scripted lines.

- Factory sealed DVD
There is no directly relevant current statistic in the cited reporting that quantifies how much of the show is scripted or edited. Older figures about The Bachelor casting or applicants do not answer that question and should not be treated as current Bachelorette facts. The most grounded conclusion is that the show is presented as unscripted, while production decisions and broadcast selection shape the version audiences watch; the accounts cited here cannot verify the details of every season or scene.
