Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver’s runs as Grey’s Anatomy series regulars ended with the Season 22 finale. They play Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman, respectively. Later coverage reported that the characters were written out at the end of the finale, “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
When did Owen and Teddy leave Grey’s Anatomy?
Their final episode was the Season 22 finale, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” listed by ABC as Season 22, Episode 18. ABC’s episode catalogue displays May 8, 2026. Shondaland’s March 25 announcement, by contrast, scheduled the U.S. broadcast for Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with streaming on Hulu the following day. These are the dates shown by the respective sources; the available information does not establish that one corrects the other. Shondaland’s announcement and ABC’s episode catalogue identify the finale and its schedule context.
In June 2026, CinemaBlend described Owen and Teddy as written out at the end of the finale. That later report confirms the characters’ exit in the story, beyond the March announcement that McKidd and Raver were leaving as regular cast members. CinemaBlend’s June 4 coverage discusses the finale departure.
Why are Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver leaving?
TheWrap reported that the exits were a creative decision based on the storyline. The reporting does not establish undisclosed personal reasons for either actor’s departure. TheWrap’s March 25 report gives that account.

Shondaland’s announcement framed the end as a story decision. Creator Shonda Rhimes said it was “both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.” Showrunner Meg Marinis called McKidd and Raver cherished members of the show’s family and said their story was coming to a close.
What did the actors say about their exits?
McKidd said Grey’s Anatomy had been a major chapter in his life, and that both playing Owen and directing on the show had shaped him. Raver said playing Teddy would always hold a special place in her heart, thanked fans for their support, and described the set as “my place of magic and my home.” Both statements were published with Shondaland’s March 25, 2026 announcement.
How long were McKidd and Raver on Grey’s Anatomy?
Kevin McKidd
According to Shondaland in 2026, McKidd joined in Season 5 in 2008. At the time of its announcement, he had appeared in 379 episodes and directed 48. Shondaland also said he directed the actors’ final episode. Those totals are the publication-time figures reported in 2026, not a promise of a current episode count.
Kim Raver
Shondaland traces Raver’s Teddy Altman story to 2009. She became a series regular later in Season 6, left after three seasons, returned briefly in Season 14, and resumed as a regular in Season 15. The same 2026 account says she had directed three episodes beginning in Season 19.

Will Owen and Teddy return?
Their departure as series regulars and their Season 22 finale exit are established; a future guest appearance or return is not. Shondaland’s announcement called the departure “never truly a goodbye,” but that is a farewell sentiment, not confirmation of a planned return.

ABC’s show page checked October 8, 2026 still included McKidd and Raver in its cast roster. That listing conflicts with the departure announcement and later finale reporting, so it should not be read as evidence that they remain series regulars. Cast pages can lag behind a show’s current status.

Shondaland named ABC as the broadcast outlet and Hulu as the next-day streaming service for the announced U.S. finale schedule. Actual availability and schedules may vary by market and date.
