The first was less severe, and he returned to performing the following month. The second left him with serious right-side mobility problems and prolonged difficulty speaking. He later returned to the Comedy Cellar in March 2022 and addressed the experience in his comedy special Different Strokes.
What happened in Keith Robinson’s two strokes?
In a June 11, 2024 interview with PEOPLE published by Yahoo Entertainment, Robinson recounted two strokes four years apart. The interview is the source for his personal account; it is not a medical record. Robinson attributed the strokes to high blood pressure and cholesterol, but the interview does not independently verify that explanation.

The interview does not give the exact date of the second stroke. The symptoms, treatment and timing above are Robinson’s recollections as reported in the interview.
How did the second stroke affect his speech and mobility?
Robinson described a stark difference between the two recoveries. After the first stroke, he said his voice remained okay and he was back onstage quickly. After the second, he described difficulty walking, right-side mobility problems and a long period in which speaking was difficult. He told PEOPLE, “My voice was out of commission for about two years.”

The interview does not identify a clinician’s diagnosis for his speech impairment. Dysarthria is a speech-motor impairment that can occur after stroke; aphasia involves difficulty with language. They are different conditions, and the interview does not establish which, if either, applied to Robinson.
What did Robinson say helped him recover?
Robinson described physical therapy, medication for blood pressure and cholesterol, and work with a speech pathologist. He also mentioned purchasing a device that went into his mouth and said it gave him some confidence. The interview does not name the device or give a brand, model or formal product category.

He also spoke about the mental toll of isolation during pandemic-era hospitalization. Reflecting on his recovery, Robinson said, “I always say the healing didn’t start in the hospital. The healing started once I left the hospital after my mental health went back up.”
What can help someone communicate after a stroke?
The American Stroke Association says dysarthria’s effects vary depending on stroke location and severity, and that people often benefit from speech therapy. It recommends working with a certified speech-language pathologist to develop an individualized treatment program. Robinson’s account is one person’s experience, not a guide to what another survivor should expect or do.

The Association also suggests practical communication strategies that may help in some situations:
- Reduce background noise and communicate face to face.
- Give context before starting a conversation.
- Keep a pencil and notepad or a small alphabet card available when helpful.
These are general options, not claims about what Robinson used. The Association also lists reading aloud and books paired with audio as possible low-cost practice ideas when insurance no longer covers professional intervention; they are not substitutes for individualized professional care.

When did Keith Robinson return to comedy?
Robinson returned to the stage for a short set at New York City’s Comedy Cellar in March 2022, according to the interview. He later discussed his comeback in Different Strokes.
