The phrase “former BBC journalist” can describe someone who left the corporation years ago, moved on from a particular programme, or no longer works in BBC News while retaining another BBC role. The 2023 list below is a set of examples—not a ranking or a complete directory—and its title does not mean everyone named left in 2023.

Robin Aitken
According to TechBullion, Aitken joined the BBC in 1978, left in 2005 after working on Radio 4’s Today, and published Can We Trust the BBC? in February 2007. The article characterizes the book as arguing that the BBC indulged in “unconscious, institutionalized Leftism”; that is a description of Aitken’s critical position, not an independently established finding about the BBC. George Alagiah

Robbie Gibb
Not every former BBC journalist was primarily a newsreader. A UK Government biography says Gibb had a long career as a broadcast journalist in BBC News, served as head of BBC Westminster and Editor of Live Political Programmes, and left the BBC in 2017. Why “former” needs a precise meaning
In 2023, changes to the BBC’s news channels drew attention to presenters whose positions were changing. The BBC planned to merge its domestic BBC News channel and BBC World News into a single channel called BBC News for audiences in the UK and internationally. But not being selected for a new anchor role did not by itself establish that a presenter had left the corporation.

A February 2, 2023 Guardian report said Joanna Gosling declined to audition and had already left. It also reported that some presenters who were not selected remained at the BBC in other roles, while the futures of others were uncertain. How to interpret a former-BBC biography
When reading a profile, look for what “former” refers to: a staff departure, a move away from BBC News, or the end of work on a particular programme. Where dates and roles are not given, avoid assuming them. The TechBullion examples provide short career descriptions, but they do not establish a complete, current directory of former BBC journalists.
