River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves were close friends and creative collaborators. They met through Martha Plimpton, grew closer while working on I Love You to Death, and agreed to star together in My Own Private Idaho. Phoenix described Reeves as an older brother; decades later, Reeves remembered Phoenix as one of his closest friends from that period. Their films portrayed emotionally intimate characters, but the available accounts describe a real-life friendship, not a romance between the actors.
How did River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves meet?
Phoenix said in a 1991 Interview conversation that he met Reeves through Martha Plimpton, Phoenix’s former girlfriend, who had worked with Reeves on Parenthood. Phoenix added that his brother Joaquin and Plimpton were friends with Reeves before he was. He met Reeves while they were working on I Love You to Death, liked him, and wanted to work with him.
Asked what Reeves meant to him, Phoenix answered, “He’s like my older brother. But shorter.” The joking description conveyed affection as well as the closeness Phoenix felt at the time. Read the 1991 Interview conversation.
Why did they make My Own Private Idaho together?
Phoenix recalled that he and Reeves each received the script for Gus Van Sant’s film while working on I Love You to Death. They discussed it in a car and made their decision together: “We said ‘OK, I’ll do it if you do it. I won’t do it if you don’t.’” Their agreement helped bring the two actors together for a film that became a defining part of their creative partnership.

What was their relationship like while filming?
Phoenix said their collaboration extended beyond performing the written scenes. He described the campfire scene as developing from off-set improvisation and conversations about their characters. As they explored the fictional relationship, he said, they found a way to take the scene beyond what the script had suggested.

“Getting deeper into it, we discovered a lot about our relationship within the film,” Phoenix said, describing how the work gave them insight to go “a hell of a lot deeper than the script ever told us it would.” In context, “our relationship” means the relationship they were building between Mike and Scott on screen—not evidence of a romantic relationship between Phoenix and Reeves off screen.
Two different acting instincts
Van Sant later recalled that Phoenix liked inventing in the moment, while Reeves tended to preserve the writer’s words. Van Sant also remembered occasional tension between the actors on set, even as he described them as close friends. That recollection adds nuance to their partnership: friendship did not mean they approached every scene or performance in the same way. Van Sant’s recollection of their work.

Were River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves friends in real life?
Yes. Phoenix’s own account from 1991 describes affection and a friendship that grew while they worked together. Reeves looked back on the connection in a 2019 interview, naming Phoenix—along with Alex Winter—as one of his closest friends from that era. He said they shared an artistic sensibility and recalled Phoenix as “so down-to-earth, spiritual and a unique artist.” Reeves ended the thought simply: “Yeah, I miss him.” Read Reeves’s 2019 reflections.
These recollections establish a meaningful friendship and artistic connection. They do not show that the two stayed in constant contact throughout the years, and they do not establish a romantic relationship between the actors. The distinction matters because My Own Private Idaho gives Mike and Scott an intimate, complicated fictional bond; the film’s characters and the actors’ off-screen lives are not interchangeable.
