Howard Stern has described himself and his older sister, Ellen, as very different children: he wanted attention, while she wanted to avoid it. A friendly birthday call Ellen made to his radio show in 2010 offers a glimpse of their adult public rapport, but it does not reveal how close they are in private today.
Does Howard Stern have a sister?
Yes. Ellen is Howard Stern’s older sister. A Newsday family profile reports that she is four years older than he is. The profile originally appeared in 1993, during publicity for his memoir Private Parts; it provides family context, not a detailed account of their relationship.
How has Howard described their childhood?
In a January 28, 2008 show rundown, Howard recalled that he wanted attention as a child while Ellen wanted none. He said she sometimes seemed to disappear from his childhood memories. That is Howard’s retrospective account of the contrast he perceived, not a shared account from both siblings.
The recollection supports a difference in their appetite for the family spotlight. By itself, it does not establish sibling rivalry, estrangement, or how either of them understood the relationship at the time.

What happened when Ellen called the show?
On January 12, 2010, Ellen called The Howard Stern Show to wish him a happy birthday. The show’s official archive records a playful exchange. Ellen joked: “They brought you home and the first thing you did was pee all over the nurse.” She laughed and added, “This is why I don’t call in…I was as pure as Snow White. That’s how I want you to think of me, Howard.”
The exchange sounds warm and teasing in that moment. It shows that Ellen joined the show to mark her brother’s birthday and was comfortable joking with him on air. One call cannot tell us how often they speak or what their private relationship is like.

What can be said about their relationship now?
The public record here is limited to Howard’s childhood recollections and Ellen’s brief appearance on his show in 2010. Neither establishes their current level of contact, and the available accounts do not include a substantive interview in which Ellen reflects on their relationship.
Howard’s interest in family stories is broader than his accounts of Ellen: in a 2013 show rundown, he said he had recorded interviews with his parents to preserve their memories. That provides context for his public attention to family history, but it does not add evidence about his relationship with Ellen.
