Kennedy Jr. and Daryl Hannah were linked for years, but accounts differ on when their relationship turned romantic and serious. Their families reportedly met on St. Martin in the early 1980s; the better-documented public romance came later, after they crossed paths again in 1988. The broad outline is clear, but the exact chronology—and how it overlapped with Kennedy’s connection to Carolyn Bessette—remains contested.
When did JFK Jr. and Daryl Hannah meet?
Accounts place their first meeting during a family vacation on St. Martin in the early 1980s. That encounter is not the same as the start of a romance: the available accounts do not establish that they began dating then.
They met again in 1988 at the wedding of Kennedy’s aunt, Lee Radziwill, to director Herbert Ross. Hannah had recently worked with Ross on Steel Magnolias. Later accounts treat this reunion differently: one describes it as the beginning of their public relationship, while another dates the relationship becoming serious several years later.
When did the relationship become serious?
The Los Angeles Times’ 1999 retrospective places the shift in 1992, after Hannah’s breakup with musician Jackson Browne. Vanity Fair’s account emphasizes the 1988 reunion as the start of the public romance. These accounts use different markers—reconnection, public relationship, and seriousness—so there is no settled precise start date.

What were their years together like?
The relationship was long, intermittent and visible in public. Kennedy and Hannah appeared together at events in 1993 and 1994, including a wedding in October 1993 and an outing in New York in June 1994. Accounts place their breakup in 1994.
How did Carolyn Bessette fit into the timeline?
Kennedy had met Carolyn Bessette before his relationship with Hannah had definitively ended, but the timing and extent of any overlap are disputed. Friends quoted in JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography recalled overlap. Kennedy’s former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio, one of the book’s authors, places his serious reconnection with Bessette in 1994, after an earlier meeting.
The recollections do not support a single uncontested sequence for when Kennedy and Bessette began dating or how that transition related to his breakup with Hannah. Kennedy and Bessette married in 1996.
Was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis opposed to Hannah?
Accounts conflict about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s view of Hannah. Vanity Fair recounts claims that Onassis disapproved, but also quotes Hannah’s stepmother, Sue Wexler, saying Hannah told her that Onassis was warm and affectionate. TIME also notes conflicting accounts. The available reporting does not establish Onassis’s attitude as a settled fact, and dramatized dialogue cannot resolve the disagreement.
What did Daryl Hannah say about the dramatization?
Hannah objected to a later television portrayal of her. In an opinion essay reported by Marie Claire, she wrote: “The character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John.” That statement records her view of the dramatization; it does not independently settle every disputed detail of the relationship.
The distinction matters: a television version may dramatize private conversations and compress a complex chronology, while the surviving public record and attributed recollections leave some details unresolved. The oral biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil offers further attributed recollections, but those memories should be read as accounts from particular witnesses, not as a complete or definitive private timeline.
