Elvis Presley’s television special aired on NBC on December 3, 1968, under the title Elvis. It was taped in June, then edited into a program that combined staged musical sequences with intimate performances before a small audience—not one continuous, unscripted concert. Today it is commonly called the “’68 Comeback Special.”
Why it was called a comeback special
The title on the original broadcast was simply Elvis; “’68 Comeback Special” became its familiar retrospective name. The label captures the program’s role as a concentrated showcase of Elvis as a performer after a period when his career was heavily associated with films. Graceland describes the broadcast as one of the major television hits of the year and says it helped his career. The official Elvis anniversary release calls it a career-reestablishing broadcast, but the available accounts do not establish a precise chart effect or quantify how much it changed his career.
The project’s direction also shifted during development. Graceland’s anniversary history describes a move away from the Christmas-centered concept associated with manager Colonel Tom Parker and toward a portrait of Elvis as a performer. Director and producer Steve Binder, with Bones Howe credited by the official Elvis catalog, helped shape that artistic direction.
When it was recorded and broadcast
Graceland’s official chronology says the special was recorded in June 1968 and broadcast on NBC on December 3, 1968. Graceland reports that it received “40% of the viewing audience” (undated chronology). That is the source’s phrasing: it should not be treated as a rating, an exact audience count, or a independently verified Nielsen figure. An official Elvis release description calls it the week’s highest-viewed television program, but does not supply a primary ratings table.

What viewers saw and heard
The program was built from contrasting kinds of performance. It paired carefully arranged production numbers with more intimate sit-down sessions in front of a small audience. That mix let the special present both the crafted spectacle of television and the directness of Elvis performing with fellow musicians.
Production numbers and the musical thread
Graceland’s chronology says the program opens with “Trouble,” reworked from the film King Creole. “Guitar Man” recurs as a musical thread linking sequences. Graceland’s anniversary account identifies numbers including “Nothingville,” “Saved,” “Guitar Man,” “Little Egypt,” “Big Boss Man,” and “Let Yourself Go.” These are examples, not a complete verified running order; later archival packages may differ from the original broadcast edit.

The sit-down performances
An official anniversary release description says the sit-down performances reunited Elvis with guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer D. J. Fontana, early collaborators. Their presence gives these sections a different feel from the staged production sequences: the emphasis is on a close-up performance setting rather than a continuous concert spectacle.
The closing song
“If I Can Dream” closes the special and remains central to its legacy. Its position gives the program a clear final statement after the varied musical formats that precede it.

Why the special remains significant
The program’s significance lies in how it framed Elvis for television: not just as a film star, but as a singer and stage performer. Its combination of studio-crafted sequences and intimate sessions offered viewers a focused look at his voice, presence, and musical connections. The broadcast’s reported audience and its place in accounts of his career support its importance, while more specific claims about downstream commercial effects require evidence beyond the available official descriptions.
