Of WWE’s four long-running legacy PLE brands, Survivor Series ranks fourth, SummerSlam third, the Royal Rumble second and WrestleMania first. This is a ranking of the events as brands—not a verdict on every annual card—based on identity, historical importance, consistency, card potential and cultural footprint. “The Big Four” is a useful editorial shorthand, not an official WWE designation; WWE’s archive includes other recurring events, and its 2022 annual report also names Money in the Bank and Hell in a Cell.
How this ranking weighs the four events
The order reflects five considerations: how clearly an event stands apart, how much historical weight it carries, how often its format can generate meaningful matches and stories, how consistently the full card has the potential to satisfy, and how strongly it functions as an annual occasion for fans. These are editorial criteria, not an official WWE scoring system. Someone who prizes spectacle, match quality, nostalgia or a signature gimmick above the others could reasonably choose a different order.
The comparison is between the four event brands across their histories and typical identities, not a season-by-season ranking of individual cards. WWE itself describes PLEs as places where Raw and SmackDown storylines often reach dramatic conclusions, so the events matter both as match cards and as story payoffs (WWE 2022 annual report).
4. Survivor Series
Why it ranks fourth
Survivor Series has the clearest original team-based identity of the four. WWE dates its first event to November 26, 1987, when the show presented multiple elimination tag team matches (WWE history timeline). That format gives the event a distinctive place in WWE history, but the brand’s identity has varied over time, making its annual promise less consistent than the Rumble’s built-in match concept or WrestleMania’s year-endpoint feel.

Its modern editions can still feel important when they give rivalries or factions a clear framework. WWE reported that Survivor Series 2023 drew 17,138 attendees and that viewership was 44% above the previous record, which had been set in 2022 (WWE’s 2023 event release). Those figures show commercial reach, not a measure of match quality; they do not change the main limitation in this ranking: the event’s format and meaning have been less stable across its history.
3. SummerSlam
Why it ranks third
SummerSlam has a strong seasonal identity: a major summer showcase that can host a wide-ranging card without depending on one recurring match. WWE says the first SummerSlam took place on August 29, 1988, at Madison Square Garden, with Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage defeating Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant in the main event (WWE history timeline). That broad format gives the event room to spotlight several divisions and rivalries at once.
Its flexibility is also a weakness. Without a signature annual contest, its identity depends more heavily on the quality and stakes of each year’s card. WWE reported that SummerSlam 2023 in Detroit drew 59,194 attendees and an $8.5 million gate, which the company described at the time as its record gate for a non-WrestleMania event. WWE also reported $7 million in sponsorship revenue for the event, up 23% over 2022 (WWE’s 2023 event release). Those company-reported business records underscore SummerSlam’s scale, but commercial success is not the same as artistic consistency.

2. Royal Rumble
Why it ranks second
The Royal Rumble’s defining match makes it the most immediately recognizable event after WrestleMania. WWE dates the inaugural Rumble match to January 24, 1988, says it featured 20 wrestlers, and records “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan as the winner (WWE history timeline). A changing field of entrants, eliminations and a final winner gives the event a built-in arc and a natural way to create anticipation about who will earn a major opportunity.
The Rumble can also function as a championship-story climax: WWE’s timeline notes that Ric Flair won the 1992 match and the vacant WWE Championship. That capacity to combine a signature contest with a consequential title result helps explain the event’s lasting appeal.
Its second-place position reflects a specific trade-off. The Rumble match can carry an entire show, but the rest of the card does not always have the same distinctive identity. WWE said Royal Rumble 2025 set a viewership record, with domestic viewership nearly 14% higher than in 2024 (WWE’s 2025 event release). That is a year-over-year company comparison, not evidence that every Rumble card is stronger than every other PLE.

1. WrestleMania
Why it ranks first
WrestleMania is the most complete event brand in this group: it has the longest history, the strongest annual-finale role and the broadest capacity to make an entire card feel like a major occasion. WWE’s chronological archive begins with WrestleMania in 1985, making it the earliest-starting event in this four-brand comparison (WWE event archive).
Its scale can make it less even from match to match than a focused one-concept event, and the spectacle can sometimes compete with the wrestling itself. But no other brand in this ranking combines comparable history with the same sense that major stories, rivalries and title pursuits can converge on one annual stage. That combination gives WrestleMania the most durable identity, even when an individual edition is uneven.
What the ranking does—and does not—measure
WWE-reported audience, gate and sponsorship records help describe the events’ reach, but they do not objectively rank match quality or overall card satisfaction. For example, WWE reported domestic viewership for its PLE portfolio was up 43% in 2022 versus 2021; that is a portfolio-wide year-over-year figure, not a comparison among these four brands (WWE 2022 annual report). Likewise, WWE said WrestleMania, SummerSlam and Royal Rumble together generated more than $300 million in economic impact for Indianapolis in a partnership announcement; WWE supplied that figure, and the cited passage does not provide a methodology (WWE partnership release). Such numbers establish business significance, not a critical verdict.
Where to watch WWE PLEs in the United States
WWE and ESPN announced that ESPN platforms, including ESPN’s direct-to-consumer service, would become the exclusive US domestic home for WWE PLEs beginning in 2026, with events streamed in their entirety. The announcement specifically includes WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, SummerSlam and Survivor Series (WWE/ESPN announcement, August 6, 2025). This is a US arrangement; it should not be assumed to describe availability elsewhere. Check current service terms and event access for your location.
