Cagematch’s available match ratings put Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 narrowly above Austin vs. The Rock at WrestleMania X-Seven—but the retrieved figures do not support a complete ranking of all seven of Austin’s WrestleMania matches. The two other matches without established individual ratings are his bouts with Scott Hall at WrestleMania X8 and Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38. The ratings below are community averages captured in 2026 where stated; Cagematch scores and vote totals can change.
Verified Cagematch match ratings, in descending order
This is a partial ranking, not a definitive seven-match order. The five available match-specific scores sort as follows:
| Rank among verified scores | WrestleMania match | Cagematch rating | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | WrestleMania 13 (1997): Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin, Submission Match | 9.63; vote count not exposed in the retrieved result | Austin passed out in Hart’s Sharpshooter; guest referee Ken Shamrock stopped the match. |
| 2 | WrestleMania X-Seven (2001): Steve Austin vs. The Rock, No Disqualification | 9.38; 870 votes, Cagematch accessed 2026 | Austin won the WWE Championship after aligning with Mr. McMahon. |
| 3 | WrestleMania XIX (2003): The Rock vs. Steve Austin | 8.40; 522 votes, Cagematch accessed 2026 | The Rock defeated Austin; WWE says Austin retired from in-ring competition at the event. |
| 4 | WrestleMania XV (1999): Steve Austin vs. The Rock | 7.45; 358 votes, Cagematch accessed 2026 | The first of Austin and The Rock’s three WrestleMania head-to-head matches, according to WWE. |
| 5 | WrestleMania XIV (1998): Shawn Michaels vs. Steve Austin | 7.18; 364 votes, Cagematch accessed 2026 | The available record is a Cagematch user average, not a measure of the match’s historical importance. |
The WrestleMania 13 score is reported in the retrieved search result; its vote total was not available there. The other figures and vote counts are snapshots from the cited Cagematch match pages, not permanent scores.
Why the seven-match ranking is incomplete
Austin appeared at seven WrestleManias: 13, XIV, XV, X-Seven, X8, XIX and 38. The available Cagematch records establish his matches against Scott Hall at X8 and Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38, but not a comparable current match-specific score for either. Without those two values, placing every appearance in numeric order would require guessing.

WrestleMania X8: Steve Austin vs. Scott Hall
Cagematch’s Austin match listing records the bout and Austin’s win. An individual rating was not established in the available record, so it cannot be inserted into the score order.
WrestleMania 38: Steve Austin vs. Kevin Owens
The same Austin match listing records their No Holds Barred match. Cagematch’s WrestleMania 38 Saturday event page shows an event rating of 8.01 from 471 votes. That is the score for the event, not a match rating for Austin vs. Owens, so it cannot be used to rank the bout against Austin’s other WrestleMania matches.

What the ratings say about Austin’s WrestleMania highlights
Among the scores that can be compared, the Hart match at WrestleMania 13 leads by 0.25 points over the X-Seven main event. Both average above 9, but their vote counts are not equally available: Cagematch’s X-Seven page shows 870 votes, while the retrieved WrestleMania 13 result did not expose a count. The figures are user ratings, not an independent assessment of match quality.
The two high-scoring matches also mark different turning points. WWE describes WrestleMania 13 as a defining launch point for Austin’s career. In Rosemont, Illinois, on March 23, 1997, the 22:04 submission match ended with Austin refusing to submit, then passing out in the Sharpshooter as Shamrock stopped the bout. WWE’s retrospective places it third on its own list of best WrestleMania matches. That editorial placement is separate from Cagematch’s average.

At WrestleMania X-Seven in Houston on April 1, 2001, Austin and The Rock wrestled a 28:07 No Disqualification match. Austin won the title after joining forces with Mr. McMahon, an ending WWE’s retrospective describes as Austin aligning with his rival. WWE ranks the match fourth on its own best-WrestleMania list; that is not a Cagematch ranking. The same retrospective attributes this reaction to Paul Heyman: “I kept thinking of a sound bite to say when the moment happened, and I couldn’t think of one! Because the vision itself was unthinkable!”

WWE identifies WrestleMania XV, X-Seven and XIX as the three WrestleMania pay-per-views headlined by Austin and The Rock together between 1999 and 2003. Their available Cagematch averages rise from 7.45 at XV to 9.38 at X-Seven, then settle at 8.40 at XIX. These are three separate user-rating snapshots, not a single ranking of the rivalry or a claim that a higher score makes one match more historically important.

The trilogy also spans different career moments: the 1999 meeting, the title-changing X-Seven match, and the 2003 bout in which The Rock defeated Austin. WWE’s Austin biography says Austin retired from in-ring competition at the end of WrestleMania XIX. The event was the final in-ring match of his career at that point.
