Why do people say Elon Musk isn’t funny? There is no representative poll establishing that he is—or is not. The sharper answer is that some widely discussed attempts at humor have drawn criticism for familiar references, over-explicit wordplay, or an unclear comic target. In a 2023 Los Angeles Times feature, eight comedians examined selected examples; their comments offer craft criticism, not a verdict from all audiences.
What the criticism actually establishes
Brian Contreras’s May 24, 2023 Los Angeles Times feature asked eight comedians to respond to particular Musk jokes and comic gestures. Their reactions help explain why those examples did not land for them. They cannot establish how funny Musk is overall or what most people think.
That distinction matters because a joke can be understood without being enjoyed. Humor researcher Adrian Hale describes failures that arise from gaps in meaning or context, as well as from “discursive resistance”: a listener may reject the joke’s assumptions or point of view. In other words, “I get it” and “I find it funny” are separate judgments. (The European Journal of Humour Research, 2018.)
Why some of the examples drew criticism
The comedians in the Times feature did not offer one unified diagnosis. Their comments point to different weaknesses in particular attempts: familiar references that do little beyond recognition, wordplay whose mechanics are too apparent, and a stunt whose intended joke may not be clear without context.

Those descriptions summarize the kinds of criticism reported in the Times feature, not a claim that every comedian agreed on every example. The useful craft questions are whether the setup is clear, whether the punchline changes or merely repeats a familiar reference, and what—if anything—the joke reveals about its target.
Sarcasm needs more than a target
Musk’s public humor is sometimes discussed as sarcasm or provocation, but sarcasm is not automatically comedy. David Shoemaker, a Cornell philosophy professor who studies the moral psychology of humor, puts it plainly: “Sarcasm itself need not be funny.” He argues that effective funny sarcasm requires perspective-taking: “The key to funny sarcasm is found in empathy, being able to take up other people’s perspectives to see what will zing them for their foolishness and what won’t.” (Cornell Chronicle.)

That account makes the target important. A cutting remark may register as mean, confusing, or self-satisfied if the audience cannot see the target’s foolishness—or if the joke seems to misunderstand the people it is trying to reach. This is a framework for assessing sarcasm, not Shoemaker’s direct analysis of every Musk joke.
Musk’s own theory of comedy
In a 2023 interview with The Babylon Bee, as reported by Mediaite, Musk described comedy as a way to expose truth: “The essence of a lot of comedy is a revealed truth.” He also said, “If you’re, you know, premised on a lie, you can no longer be funny ’cause there’s no revealed truth.” Musk argued in that interview that restrictions on topics constrain comedy. The idea of revealing a truth can explain why a joke appeals to people who share its premise: they recognize an observation that feels taboo or overlooked. But recognition alone does not guarantee a strong punchline. A listener may find the premise unpersuasive, the target unfair, or the joke’s wording too obvious. Hale’s distinction between understanding a joke and accepting its point helps explain why people can hear the same attempt differently.
When humor has reputational stakes
Comedy from a prominent business leader can be judged as more than comedy. Bloomberg’s January 25, 2023 analysis connected Musk’s $420-per-share proposal to take Tesla private, alongside other public behavior, with regulatory and shareholder concerns and questions about Tesla’s brand. That is Bloomberg’s analysis of a broader business and reputation context; it does not establish that a joke alone caused a financial or legal outcome. (Bloomberg.)

The Washington Post’s November 7, 2022 column about Twitter under Musk offered a critical opinion about the platform’s comedy rhetoric, not a neutral measure of audience response. Its value is as an example of how observers interpret the culture around the jokes—not evidence that all users share that view. (The Washington Post.)

Instead of treating “funny” as a settled trait, evaluate the particular attempt. These questions separate comic craft from disagreement with a joke’s premise:

- Is the setup intelligible? Can a viewer follow the reference and understand what the punchline depends on?
- Does the punchline add something? A familiar allusion may be recognizable but still offer little surprise or new perspective.
- Is the target clear? Does the joke expose a target’s foolishness, or is it hard to tell whom—or what—it is meant to ridicule?
- Does context make the attempt legible? A post, visual stunt, or reference may not work if the audience lacks the context needed to decode it.
- What kind of objection is being made? “I didn’t understand it,” “the craft is weak,” “I reject its premise,” and “it harms its target” are different criticisms.
The same distinction applies to reactions. A joke can fail because its mechanics are weak, because its audience resists its point, or because the listener objects to what it does. Those explanations can overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
