Spoilers for the series finale of Evil, season 4, episode 14. “Fear of the End” gives Kristen, David, and Ben a way forward, but not a clean victory: Leland is locked away rather than killed, the assessors’ work resumes in Rome, and the final image of baby Timothy leaves a new supernatural threat hanging over the family.
What happens in the Evil finale?
With the Church having shut down the assessors’ work, the trio is at a crossroads. Kristen sees patients from her home office, Ben starts a technology job, and David is pulled back toward the Entity’s effort against the Sixty. At home, Kristen’s daughters begin playing Mother Midnight on their VR goggles. The frightening game turns their fears into visions of what may happen to them—including a vision of Leland killing Kristen.
That warning takes on urgency when the family learns Leland has violated Kristen’s order of protection and is tied to a plan involving the Sixty. The assessors burn their case notes instead of handing them to the Entity. Then Leland attacks Kristen at home. She nearly strangles him, but David and Ben arrive in time to stop her.
Rather than kill Leland, the three take him to the silent monastery from “S Is for Silence” and lock him in the cabinet associated with a demon. Sister Andrea and Fenna are left to watch over him. The immediate confrontation ends with Leland contained, not dead.

Why does Kristen spare Leland?
Kristen’s choice is both a practical intervention and a moral turning point: she comes close to repeating an earlier killing, but David and Ben prevent it. Co-creator Robert King told TV Guide that having Kristen kill Leland would repeat a killing for which the show had explored forgiveness, and would run against the series’ spirit. The cabinet offers a way to end the attack without resolving the threat through another act of violence.
Where do the assessors go after the finale?
The closing stretch gives the central characters a tentative new beginning. The Vatican restarts the assessor program, and Kristen, David, and the children move to Rome. Ben stays in New York for his technology job and promises to visit. The arrangement reunites Kristen and David professionally while leaving Ben on a separate path.

The move is hopeful, but not a declaration that the danger has passed. Timothy’s eyes and pointed teeth appear demonic in the final scene. Kristen sees the change and conceals it from David. Actor Katja Herbers told TV Guide that the script left some room to wonder whether the look might be a trick of the light; her performance choice made clear that Kristen sees the features and covers for the baby.
Can the Sixty be stopped?
The episode does not show the Sixty being defeated or establish what ultimately happens to the group. Leland’s confinement settles the immediate personal crisis, but the larger threat remains open. The finale therefore offers resolution on one scale—Kristen does not kill Leland, and the assessors have a new assignment—while withholding a final answer about the group’s plans.

That distinction matters to the ending’s tone. Rome suggests a reset for the family and the work, while Timothy’s appearance implies that the supernatural danger has not simply been left behind. The last beat is unsettling precisely because Kristen recognizes it and chooses silence.
What the finale says about technology and evil
The VR game is a plot device that brings the children’s fears into the family’s immediate crisis. Co-creator Robert King also described a broader thematic connection the writers had been developing between computers, human neural links, and evil. In his TV Guide interview, he said the show was moving toward an ending in which social media and computers could be understood as the “true evil.” That is the creators’ framing of the technology thread, not a factual claim that technology itself is evil.

The technology theme sits alongside the series’ mix of horror, humor, and moral questions rather than replacing them. Herbers described the show as containing horror as well as amusement, goofiness, and fun in the same interview. The finale keeps that tonal mixture even as it closes on a disturbing image.
