That premise gives the episode a compelling case as a Vegeta love letter—and, by my criteria, one of the anime’s strongest episodes. Calling it the best is a judgment, not a consensus ranking.
What happens in Dragon Ball DAIMA episode 12?
Crunchyroll lists the season 1 episode as “True Strength.” Apple TV’s synopsis sets out its central turn: “Vegeta’s battle with the Tamagami is evenly matched, but when forced underwater where he’s not used to fighting, he finds himself struggling.” The conflict is built around a clear shift: a balanced contest becomes harder for Vegeta when the conditions move outside his accustomed fighting environment.

That summary establishes the episode’s core setup, but not a complete scene-by-scene account. A spoiler-light way to describe its appeal is that the opponent alone does not define the test; the unfamiliar environment does, too.
Why the episode feels like a Vegeta love letter
It puts Vegeta’s challenge at the center
The episode synopsis focuses on Vegeta’s battle rather than presenting him as a side participant in someone else’s conflict. For viewers invested in his character, that focus matters: the episode’s main question is how he handles a fight that stops favoring him.

It tests strength through disadvantage
“True Strength” is a fitting title for a premise in which Vegeta is not simply facing an evenly matched opponent under familiar conditions. The underwater setting makes his lack of experience there part of the problem. The available synopsis does not spell out every beat or resolve the episode’s theme for the viewer, but it does establish a challenge that can make strength mean more than having the upper hand.
It connects the fight to DAIMA’s adventure premise
Toei describes DAIMA as an adventure/action series whose premise begins with Goku and company suddenly becoming small because of a conspiracy. Against that broader setup, an unusual fighting environment fits the series’ willingness to put familiar characters into unfamiliar circumstances. Episode 12’s particular hook, however, is specifically Vegeta’s struggle against the Tamagami underwater.

Is episode 12 the best episode in the anime?
There is no episode ranking or audience statistic in the cited listings that establishes episode 12 as DAIMA’s objective best, and the synopsis cannot prove a comparative verdict. The case has to be made on criteria. If “best” means an episode that puts Vegeta at the center, gives him a clearly defined disadvantage, and makes that disadvantage part of the character-facing conflict, “True Strength” has a strong claim. If the deciding factor is the most satisfying payoff or the strongest full arc, those judgments depend on the complete episode and a viewer’s comparison with the rest of the series.
So the most defensible verdict is also a useful one: episode 12 is a standout Vegeta episode and a plausible personal pick for the anime’s best, rather than a universally established winner. Akira Toriyama’s credited work on DAIMA’s original concept, story, and character designs is important franchise context, but it does not by itself establish a specific intention behind this episode.
