Dragon Ball Super manga author Toyotarou said that nearly every Dragon Ball work is “more or less canon” to him because he has seen it—but he also said deciding canon is not really his role and that fans should choose what belongs in their own continuity. His remarks at Japan Expo 2025 describe a personal perspective, not an official franchise-wide ruling.

What did Toyotarou say about “everything is canon”?

In an interview at Japan Expo 2025 in Paris, Toyotarou was asked about the debate over what is considered canon, particularly after Dragon Ball Daima. In the translated transcript, he said: “I like almost all the works that exist of Dragon Ball. For me, everything is more or less canon because I’ve seen it. After that, it’s not really my role to know who determines what is canon and what isn’t. And I think it’s better if each fan decides for themselves what is canon or not in their own continuity, and I think that’s better.”

The interview notes that Toyotarou used the Japanese word for “canon” (カノン, kanon). He offered Dragon Ball Online, a game he had played, as an example of a work that counts as canon for him. The full interview installment was published by DB-Z.com on July 7, 2025.

Is this an official Dragon Ball canon ruling?

No. Toyotarou framed the answer as his own way of embracing the franchise, then explicitly stepped back from deciding who determines canon. His suggestion was that each fan can decide what counts in their own continuity. The interview does not establish that every Dragon Ball story, game, film, and series fits into one coherent timeline, nor does it announce a binding policy on behalf of the franchise.

How did the other interviewees answer?

Speaker What they said Scope of the comment
Toyotarou Nearly all works are more or less canon to him because he has seen them; he favors fans choosing their own continuity. His personal perspective, not an official universal ruling.
Kazuhiko Torishima Speaking from his own point of view, he said Akira Toriyama sometimes forgot continuity and wrote without worrying about it. He concluded, “In conclusion, there is no continuity or order – point blank.” Torishima’s recollection and opinion, not a formal franchise policy.
Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru He said he was not really sure about the canon question. Uncertainty; it should not be read as agreement with either of the other speakers.

The remarks appear in the same DB-Z.com interview transcript. Separate notes from a press-conference attendee, published July 16, 2025, also characterize Toyotarou’s answer as personal opinion and mention Dragon Ball Online as an example: Kanzenshuu’s Japan Expo 2025 notes.

What fans can take from the comments

  • The viral shorthand “everything is canon” leaves out Toyotarou’s qualification: he was describing what is canon for him.
  • He did not claim authority to settle the question; he said fans could shape their own continuities.
  • Torishima’s statement about loose continuity was a separate viewpoint, while Nakatsuru expressed uncertainty.
  • The interview clarifies these participants’ perspectives, but it does not settle every continuity conflict or establish an official unified timeline.
