When did Dr. Ruth Westheimer die, and how old was she?

Westheimer died on July 12, 2024, at age 96. Her family’s statement, reported by ABC News, said she died peacefully at home in New York surrounded by family. The statement did not give a cause of death.

Who was Dr. Ruth?

Born Karola Ruth Siegel in Germany in 1928, Westheimer became a sex educator, therapist, author, teacher and broadcaster. “Dr. Ruth” was the public name by which generations of listeners and viewers knew her. Her career joined professional work in family planning and education with a distinctive, accessible presence in popular media.

How her early life shaped her path

At age 10, Westheimer was sent to a Swiss orphanage during the Nazi era. She never saw her parents again; Teachers College at Columbia University reports that her parents and extended family perished in the Holocaust. After the war, she lived in Israel/Palestine and studied psychology in Paris. She immigrated to the United States in 1956 and continued her education while working.

She worked in family planning and education, studied human sexuality with Dr. Helen Singer Kaplan, and taught at several colleges. Westheimer connected her decision to enter a helping profession with her own survival: “I realize if I had been in Belgium or France, I wouldn’t be here,” she said in a 2019 interview with Hope Leichter, TC’s Elbenwood Professor of Education. “So that fact of having been saved has made me have an obligation to help others. And that is why going into the helping profession was the right thing for me.”

From late-night radio to a national audience

Westheimer began broadcasting in New York in 1980 with a short late-night radio program called Sexually Speaking. By the time the format expanded to an hour in 1981, it was drawing 4,000 calls a night, according to the Los Angeles Times. That figure describes calls to the early show, not the number of listeners or a measure of her overall influence.

The program became nationally syndicated in 1984. Its success led to television appearances and programs, newspaper columns, lectures and a long publishing career. Her candid, practical style helped make questions about sex discussable for a broad audience. As she put it in a 1982 interview quoted by Newsweek and reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, “People trust me because I’m not a put-on.”

What made her work influential?

Teachers College credits Westheimer with bringing discussion of women’s sexual pleasure into public conversation, providing fact-based information about HIV/AIDS during the crisis, and helping normalize discussion of sex. Those are the institution’s assessments of her contribution, not a quantified measurement of cultural impact.

Her work was not limited to a media persona or to sex therapy. She taught as an adjunct and remained active in public life. In 2023, she was appointed New York’s Loneliness Ambassador, extending her public advocacy to connection and social isolation. She once said, “I don’t want to be known only as a sex therapist. I want to be known as a therapist,” as quoted by The New York Times and reproduced by Teachers College.

Books and the documentary about her life

Westheimer authored many books, including Sex for Dummies. The 2019 documentary Ask Dr. Ruth is a separate work about her life and career; current streaming availability is not established here.

Allison Gilbert, Westheimer’s co-author, captured the personal dimension of her connection with audiences in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times: “I will remember Dr. Ruth for how she made people feel — that we all are uniquely important, matter, and belong,”
