Does DAIMA’s Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta Create a Dragon Ball Plot Hole?

DAIMA shows Vegeta transforming into Super Saiyan 3, but the reveal does not by itself prove a Dragon Ball plot hole. Here is what the official sources establish about the form, its cost, and the unanswered continuity question.

Dragon Ball DAIMA reveals that Vegeta can transform into Super Saiyan 3, a capability not shown in stories released earlier. That revelation invites a continuity question, but it does not by itself prove a major plot hole: no cited scene establishes that Vegeta had to use the form, and official sources do not explain why he does not use it in later-released material.

When does Vegeta use Super Saiyan 3 in DAIMA?

Vegeta transforms into Super Saiyan 3 in DAIMA episode 12, during his fight with a Tamagami. ORICON’s episode report, published December 27, 2024, says the two are evenly matched; Vegeta struggles when the fight takes him underwater, then unleashes his true strength. The transformation is a new on-screen fact about his abilities, not merely a fan-game appearance. ORICON’s episode 12 report describes the reveal.

The official Dragon Ball site calls DAIMA an original anime and credits Akira Toriyama with its original concept, story, and character designs. That establishes Toriyama’s creative role, but it is not an official ruling on how every part of the franchise’s continuity fits together. The official announcement gives the production credit.

Is this a retcon or a plot hole?

In the ordinary sense of “retcon,” DAIMA adds a previously unstated capability to Vegeta’s story: viewers now know he can reach Super Saiyan 3. But a newly revealed ability is not automatically a continuity contradiction. A plot hole would require more than an earlier story not showing the form; it would need a specific event or choice that becomes impossible or incoherent because Vegeta had the ability.

The available official material establishes the transformation, but it does not identify a particular later scene in which Vegeta must use Super Saiyan 3. Not using a form on screen is different from being unable to use it, and neither fact alone proves that a prior story contradicts DAIMA. Calling the reveal a “major DBZ plot hole” therefore goes beyond what the evidence establishes.

Why does the release timeline not settle the question?

The official franchise chronology places Battle of Gods in 2013, the start of Dragon Ball Super serialization and broadcast in 2015, and the beginning of DAIMA’s broadcast in 2024. Those are release milestones, not a complete in-universe timeline. Release order alone cannot establish where DAIMA falls relative to every version of Super, or prove that one series must account for the other’s every detail. The official chronology documents the dates without resolving that broader placement.

Could Super Saiyan 3’s energy cost explain Vegeta’s choice?

There is a plausible in-story consideration, but it is not a confirmed explanation for Vegeta. In a retrospective on the Buu story, the official Dragon Ball site says of Goku: “Having expended his energy in the Super Saiyan 3 transformation, Goku returns to Another World.” That supports the point that the transformation carried a serious energy cost for Goku in that context. It does not establish Vegeta’s motives, or prove that he avoids the form in later stories for the same reason. The official retrospective describes Goku’s experience.

Readers can reasonably wonder whether the form’s cost makes other transformations or tactics preferable in some circumstances. Without an official statement about Vegeta’s decision-making, however, that remains interpretation—not a canonical answer to why he does or does not transform.

Does Goku also use Super Saiyan 3 in DAIMA?

Yes. Official coverage of the series’ climax says Goku reaches Super Saiyan 3 at the end of episode 17 and previews his battle with Third Eye Gomah in episode 18. This confirms another use of the form within DAIMA; it does not explain Vegeta’s absence from other released stories. The official episode coverage describes Goku’s transformation.

What can be said with confidence?

  • DAIMA episode 12 shows Vegeta transform into Super Saiyan 3 while fighting a Tamagami.
  • The reveal adds a previously unstated ability to Vegeta’s story, but the available official sources do not establish that it makes a specific earlier scene impossible.
  • The official Buu-story retrospective documents an energy cost for Goku, not a stated reason for Vegeta’s later choices.
  • No cited official source explains why Vegeta does not use Super Saiyan 3 in later-released stories.

ComicBook.com characterizes the DAIMA scene as Vegeta’s first in-continuity Super Saiyan 3 appearance, distinguishing it from earlier game appearances. That is secondary characterization, not an official canon decree. Its account of the form’s history offers that distinction.
