Spoilers for season 1, episode 3, “The Hollow of His Hand.” Hector Ayala, the White Tiger, is killed after the trial in which Matt Murdock defends him. The final shot shows a dimly lit shooter wearing the Punisher emblem—but it does not confirm that the shooter is Frank Castle.

Who dies in episode 3?

Hector Ayala, known as the White Tiger, is the shocking death at the end of “The Hollow of His Hand.” Matt Murdock has been defending Ayala in court, and the killing comes after the case reaches its resolution. The Ringer’s episode recap identifies Ayala as the victim and describes the final image.

Is the shooter really the Punisher?

The episode’s closing image links the killing to Punisher imagery: the shooter wears the character’s logo. That is evidence of the emblem, not confirmation of the person beneath it. The available episode recap does not establish that the shooter is Frank Castle, so it is more accurate to say that someone wearing the Punisher symbol kills Ayala than to say that the Punisher himself does.

Frank Castle is part of the series: The Walt Disney Company’s March 4, 2025 announcement identifies Jon Bernthal as the actor returning as the Punisher. His presence in the show’s story world makes the emblem significant, but that announcement does not identify the shooter in episode 3.

Why Ayala’s death matters to the story

The timing makes the death more than a sudden shock: it follows Matt’s attempt to defend Ayala through the legal system. Marvel’s series synopsis places Murdock’s pursuit of justice through his law firm alongside Wilson Fisk’s political ambitions in New York. Read in that context, Ayala’s fate sharpens the show’s tension between legal justice and political power, even as the episode leaves the shooter’s identity unresolved.

The White Tiger trial’s comic connection

For readers interested in related background, GamesRadar points to a White Tiger trial story in Daredevil (Volume 2) #38–40. That connection makes the issues relevant companion reading, but it is not evidence that the episode directly adapts the comics. The article does not establish current availability or a particular collected edition.
