The option debuted with You Season 5 on April 24, 2025. It is an additional choice, not a replacement for captions, and whether you see it depends on the title and your device.
What Netflix’s dialogue-only subtitles show
Netflix announced the format on April 24, 2025, debuting it with You Season 5. The company said it would add the option to new Netflix originals in the languages it offers, alongside SDH/CC tracks. In its example, “English” displayed spoken dialogue, while “English (CC)” included dialogue and audio cues. Netflix’s current Help Center also says a title may offer dialogue-only subtitles when SDH is unavailable.

Dialogue-only subtitles, SDH/CC, and audio description
| Option | What it provides | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dialogue-only subtitles | Spoken dialogue, translated or transcribed as appropriate. | “I’m leaving.” |
| SDH or closed captions | Dialogue plus relevant sound and speaker information, such as music, a door slamming, or who is speaking off-screen. | “[Door slams] I’m leaving.” |
| Audio description | A spoken narration of visual information, such as actions, settings, and scene changes. It is an audio track, not on-screen text. | A narrator describes a character entering a room. |
Netflix describes subtitles as dialogue rendered as readable text and closed captions as dialogue plus sound descriptions. Its accessibility overview explains the distinction; its audio-description guide covers the separate narrated track.

How to select dialogue-only subtitles
- Start playing the title.
- Open the playback controls. On a phone, tablet, or computer, tap or click the screen. On most TVs, streaming players, consoles, and Blu-ray players, press the up or down button on the remote or controller.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Under subtitles, choose the language listed without a CC, SDH, or similar accessibility label—for example, English rather than English (CC).
- Resume playback and check that the displayed text matches what you want.
Labels can vary by title, language, device, and region. A language name without “CC” is usually the dialogue-only track; a label such as “English (CC)” or “English (SDH)” usually indicates captions with sound information. “English [Audio Description]” identifies an audio track, not subtitles. Netflix’s player guidance notes that available options vary.
Why choose one format over the other?
Choose dialogue-only subtitles when you want less on-screen text
They can help when speech is hard to follow because of accents, fast dialogue, a noisy room, or a complicated plot. They may also suit someone watching while another person sleeps, or someone reading along while listening to the original performance. If frequent descriptions of music and background sounds make captions visually busy, a dialogue-only track offers a simpler presentation.
Choose SDH/CC when sound information matters
Captions can convey information that dialogue alone misses: an alarm, a meaningful sound off-screen, a change in music, or whether a speaker is whispering or shouting. That context can be essential for viewers who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Dialogue-only subtitles are an additional preference, not a substitute for accessible captions.

Availability and situations that can be confusing
Tracks vary by title, episode, region, and device
Netflix subtitle options can differ by country, licensing, profile settings, device, season, or episode. The dialogue-only track may be absent even when SDH/CC is available, or vice versa. Older devices may not support every language. Netflix’s subtitle-availability guide describes these limits.
Downloads may show fewer languages
For a downloaded title, Netflix may show only the two most relevant languages. Remove the download and stream the title to check whether more options are available.
Check subtitles and audio together for dubbed content
A subtitle track may not match a dub word for word. Dubs can be adapted for timing and spoken delivery, while subtitles may follow different dialogue or translation choices. Check both the selected audio and subtitle tracks; do not assume a language-only subtitle label always corresponds to the original audio.

Some text can remain when subtitles are off
Netflix says subtitles may still appear for dialogue in a language other than the title’s original language. A dialogue-only track may also include text needed to follow foreign-language dialogue or plot-critical signs. Text permanently embedded in the video is separate from a selectable subtitle track, so changing the player setting will not remove it.
How to customize subtitle appearance
On supported devices, Netflix lets you adjust subtitle or caption font, size, shadow, and background. The available controls depend on the device and country.
On a web browser
- Open your Netflix account page.
- Select Profiles, then choose a profile.
- Select Subtitle appearance, make changes, and select Save.
On a TV or streaming device
- Start playback and pause the title.
- Open the player controls and select Settings.
- Adjust subtitle size and style, if the controls are available.
On an Android phone or tablet
- Open the Netflix app and select My Netflix.
- Select the profile name, then Manage Profiles.
- Choose the profile, then Subtitle Appearance, and select a style.
Netflix says Android appearance changes apply only to titles played on that Android device. Older devices and some countries may not offer these controls. See Netflix’s subtitle-appearance instructions for details.

What to do if the option is missing or subtitles behave unexpectedly
The dialogue-only track is not listed
- The title may not have that version, or the season or episode may use different language assets.
- Language availability can differ by location, licensing, profile, and device.
- If the title is downloaded, remove the download and check while streaming.
- Try another supported device; some older devices may not display every language.
For more detail on these limitations, see Netflix’s availability guidance.
Sound descriptions still appear
Reopen Audio & Subtitles and check that the selected track is not marked CC, SDH, or a similar caption label. If the text is part of the video image rather than a selectable track, the player cannot turn it off.
Subtitles appear after you turned them off
They may be translating dialogue in a language other than the title’s original language. Netflix describes this behavior in its subtitle help page.

Preferences do not stick or a track works on only one device
Netflix notes that subtitle and audio preferences may not be retained in the same way for most Kids titles viewed from an adult profile; it advises using a title rated Teens or above to set a preference. If a language is available but does not display properly, try another device. The subtitle instructions and availability guide cover these cases.
Subtitles are intermittent or fail to load
Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the network, removing VPN, proxy, or custom DNS settings, and restarting the device and home network. If the problem persists, contact Netflix. See Netflix’s subtitle troubleshooting steps.
