Compare legal free movie services in the U.S.—from Tubi and Pluto TV to library-backed Kanopy and Hoopla—and learn how to find a specific film safely.

For free, legal on-demand movies in the United States, start with Tubi. If you have access through a participating library or university, check Kanopy for independent, documentary, classic, and international films, or Hoopla for library borrowing. For live movie channels, try Pluto TV; for a mix of live and on-demand viewing, try The Roku Channel.

This guide focuses on services accessible in the U.S. as of August 2026. Most commercial options are free because they run ads; library services require eligible access, and individual titles can rotate or be restricted by location. “Free” here means no paid subscription is required for the service’s free catalog—not that every title on a platform is free.

Compare the best free movie services

Service Best for Viewing style Ads and access Main trade-off
Tubi General movie browsing On demand Ad-supported; basic viewing is advertised as free, with sign-in useful for features such as watchlists Catalog rotates and includes commercial breaks
Pluto TV Live-channel surfing Live channels and on demand Ad-supported; some features or devices may prompt for an account Finding one exact movie can be less direct than browsing an on-demand library
The Roku Channel Free TV-style browsing On demand and live channels Free ad-supported content; availability and access vary Content is spread across categories and channels; a Roku device is not necessarily required
Kanopy Independent, documentary, classic, and international cinema On demand Usually ad-free; requires a participating library or educational institution Eligibility, catalog, and play-credit rules vary by institution
Hoopla Library borrowing, including films and other media On demand Requires a participating library card; borrowing limits are library-specific Access and available titles depend on the library
YouTube Free Primetime Movies Rotating official free titles On demand Ad-supported; YouTube also lists rentals and purchases Free films are mixed with paid titles, clips, trailers, and user uploads
Plex Free movies alongside personal-media tools On demand and live programming Ad-supported free catalog; account needs can vary by feature Its broader media-server features may be unnecessary if you only want to watch a movie
Internet Archive Public-domain, historical, and archival films On demand Access varies by item Check the rights status and quality of each title; the archive is not uniformly public domain

Service catalogs, device support, sign-in prompts, and regional availability change. Use these as starting points, then confirm the title on the service itself.

Which free movie service should you choose?

For mainstream browsing: Tubi

Tubi is a practical first stop if you want a conventional on-demand library without paying for a subscription. Its selection spans genres and includes older studio films, genre movies, television movies, and originals. Tubi describes the service as free and legal, supported by advertising; its catalog and availability vary by location (Tubi’s service information). The company says ads fund free viewing, but it does not establish one fixed ad load for every title and viewer (Tubi’s advertising explanation).

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote

  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Basic viewing is advertised as free. Signing in can help with personalization and watchlists, but prompts may vary by device, region, or feature. Tubi lists web, mobile, smart-TV, streaming-device, and game-console access; check its current device options for your setup (Tubi).

For documentaries and film discovery: Kanopy

Kanopy is a strong fit if you have a participating public library or university and want documentaries, independent films, classics, educational titles, or international cinema. It is generally a more selective, film-focused option than an unlimited mainstream channel. Access, catalog, and any monthly play-credit rules depend on the institution; check your library or school’s terms rather than assuming every card or campus account qualifies.

  1. Go to Kanopy and choose the option to find or add a library.
  2. Search for your public library or university and sign in with its credentials.
  3. Browse the available catalog and review the access rules shown for each title. Some institutions use monthly play credits, and the limits vary.

For a library’s broader media collection: Hoopla

Hoopla lets eligible library members borrow movies as well as television, e-books, audiobooks, comics, and music. Your library determines whether it participates, which titles are available, and how many items you may borrow. A title visible in a general search may not be available through your own library.

  1. Create or open a Hoopla account and select your participating library.
  2. Verify your library-card details as prompted.

See Hoopla for access, then consult your library for its specific limits.

For live movie channels: Pluto TV

Pluto TV suits viewers who enjoy channel surfing and scheduled programming. It combines live movie channels with an on-demand selection, so it can be easier to put something on than to search for a particular film. It is ad-supported, and a live channel follows a broadcast-style schedule rather than giving you full control over when a movie starts. Account prompts can differ by device or feature.

For on-demand and live browsing: The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel combines free on-demand movies with live channels. It is useful on Roku devices, but Roku also describes access to its free content beyond Roku hardware; availability and supported regions vary (The Roku Channel). Roku devices also surface free content in areas labeled “Free” or “Featured Free” (Roku support). Expect an ad-supported, TV-style mix rather than one uniform movie catalog.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

For a specific older or promoted film: YouTube

YouTube’s Free Primetime Movies program offers ad-supported titles at no charge in the U.S. and other supported countries, and its free catalog changes over time (YouTube’s program details). Start in the official YouTube movie catalog, then look for the free-with-ads area. YouTube also offers paid rentals and purchases, so a movie page or search result is not automatically free (YouTube’s rental and purchase information).

Confirm that the listing is presented as free through YouTube’s movie interface or an identifiable official channel. Search results also include trailers, clips, and uploads whose authorization may differ. Supported devices include browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles, but individual titles and playback quality can have restrictions (YouTube playback devices).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For free movies plus personal-media features: Plex

Plex offers an ad-supported movie and TV catalog alongside tools for organizing personal media (Plex’s free catalog). It makes most sense if those media-management features are useful to you too. If you only want a quick way to locate a movie, another on-demand service may be simpler. The free catalog varies, and Plex’s privacy and advertising practices can vary by region (Plex privacy policy).

For public-domain and archival films: Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is useful for historical, archival, and older films. Do not assume that everything in its feature-film collection is public domain or otherwise cleared for every use: check the rights information on the individual item (Internet Archive feature films). The collection is a better match for archival discovery than for current commercial releases.

How to find a particular movie for free

  1. Search for the title in JustWatch’s U.S. availability guide.
  2. Choose a Free or Ads filter if available, and distinguish those results from rent, buy, or subscription options.
  3. Open the official service listing rather than relying only on the availability guide.
  4. Confirm the title is available in your country and on your device. Licensing can change, so check again when you are ready to watch.

Availability guides can lag behind licensing changes; the service’s own listing is the final check. A title saved to a watchlist may still leave when its streaming rights expire.

What “free” means—and what it does not

  • Free with ads: Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, and YouTube’s free-movie catalog do not require a paid subscription for their free catalogs, but ads are part of the viewing experience.
  • Free through a library or school: Kanopy and Hoopla require access through a participating institution. A library card or university affiliation does not guarantee participation or unlimited borrowing.
  • Free public-domain or authorized films: Internet Archive items and official YouTube channels can offer free viewing, but authorization and rights should be assessed title by title.
  • Not a free service: A movie included only with a paid Netflix, Prime, Max, or other subscription is not free for someone who must join that service. A free trial is temporary and may renew as a paid subscription.
  • Not a safe shortcut: Unofficial download sites and sideloaded “free movie” apps are not recommended. Avoid pop-up players, repeated redirects, suspicious browser extensions, and requests to install an APK or use a VPN to watch.

For legitimate services, look for an identifiable operator, an official domain or app-store listing, and clear service policies. A platform’s legitimacy does not make every third-party upload on it authorized: use official movie shelves, studio channels, or clearly identified rights holders where possible.

What to expect from ads and new releases

Advertising is the main trade-off on commercial free services. Ads may play before a film and during it; frequency varies with the title, runtime, device, location, and available advertising. Live channels can feel more interruption-heavy because they follow scheduled programming. Some services may show a break even when no ad is available. There is no reliable universal minutes-per-hour figure for every service and viewing session.

One independent comparison reported substantially heavier advertising on Pluto TV than Tubi in its particular test; that is a test result, not a permanent platform-wide measure (Tom’s Guide comparison).

Free services usually are not the place to expect current theatrical releases or every new premium movie. Their catalogs may include older theatrical releases, independent films, public-domain works, library titles, or newer films after paid rental, purchase, or subscription windows. Rights are licensed by territory and time period, so availability can change without notice.

Watch on a computer, phone, or TV

You do not need a smart TV to watch: browser-based services can play on a computer, and many have mobile apps for phones and tablets. On a television, check for the service’s app on your smart TV, streaming device, or game console. Casting from a phone or browser may work when both the service and receiving device support it.

Tubi lists web, mobile, smart-TV, streaming-device, and console access (Tubi device information). YouTube supports browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles for supported content (YouTube device information). Exact compatibility changes; check the current app listing for your device before troubleshooting playback.

When a free movie will not play

  • The listing opens a payment screen: Check whether it is a rental, purchase, premium add-on, subscription-only title, or a free-with-ads listing. Do not enter payment details unless you intend to pay.
  • The title is listed but unavailable: It may have left the catalog, be blocked by regional licensing, or be unavailable through your library. Confirm it on the service’s own page and check a legitimate availability guide for another option.
  • Playback fails on your device: Update the app or try a current browser. A VPN, aggressive ad blocker, DNS filter, or privacy extension can interfere; temporarily disable it only if appropriate, then try again.
  • A library card is requested: That is normal for Kanopy and Hoopla. Use your own eligible library or school access; do not bypass eligibility checks or use someone else’s credentials.
  • A pop-up offers a player or download: Leave the page. Do not install an unverified player, APK, or browser extension to make a movie work.

For another option, check a different official service. Never treat a suspicious redirect or a download button as proof that a movie is legally or safely available.
