As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s U.S. App Store lists the official X app for Apple TV. It is free to download, requires tvOS 10.0 or later according to the listing, and is most useful for watching public video, livestreams, news, and event conversations. You need an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K to download apps; Apple TV 3rd generation cannot install new ones.
What is the X app on Apple TV?
X is the social network formerly known as Twitter. The Apple TV listing is for the X Corp. social app, not Apple’s separate Apple TV streaming service. Apple describes that streaming service as a place for Apple Originals, rentals, purchases, sports, and other services: Apple TV app.
X is a real-time news and social platform, rather than a conventional television subscription service. On a television, its strongest use cases are watching video and public livestreams, following breaking news or sports conversations, and viewing public posts together on a large screen.
Does X work on Apple TV?
As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s U.S. App Store lists “X (formerly Twitter)” by X Corp. as compatible with Apple TV and says the Apple TV version requires tvOS 10.0 or later. The listing is categorized under News and marked free with in-app purchases. Availability may differ by country or App Store storefront, so check the listing for your region: X on the U.S. App Store.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
The tvOS requirement is not a promise that every Apple TV model can install the app. Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD can download apps through the App Store; Apple TV 3rd generation cannot download new apps. Apple’s guidance covers those hardware limits and the app-installation process: Download apps on Apple TV.
Which Apple TV models can install X?
- Apple TV 4K: An App Store-capable model and the main current Apple TV category to consider.
- Apple TV HD: Apple documents App Store downloads for this model as well.
- Apple TV 3rd generation: Cannot download new apps because it does not have an App Store for that purpose.
To identify your device and software version, open Settings → General → About on Apple TV. If your model is older or unclear, do not infer compatibility from the tvOS 10.0 requirement alone; check the model’s App Store access and whether X appears as installable.

What can you do in X on a television?
The App Store description and X’s general app-download page promote features across the X ecosystem, including video, live events, conversations, sports clips, podcasts, and livestreams. X’s support page focuses on iOS and Android rather than documenting Apple TV setup or feature parity, so its general feature list should not be read as a guarantee that every function is available or convenient with a Siri Remote: X app download information.
| Use | Fit for a TV | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Public video and livestreams | Strong | The App Store listing promotes video and livestream content. Access to a particular stream depends on its availability, geography, account access, and whether it is still live. |
| Sports clips and event conversation | Strong | X promotes sports content, but a clip, commentary, creator stream, or selected broadcast is not a guarantee of access to a complete game. |
| Breaking news and public feeds | Useful for occasional viewing | A large screen can make public coverage easy to share, though fast-moving or dense timelines may be less comfortable to browse than on a phone. |
| Posting and long-form writing | Limited fit | Remote-based text entry may be cumbersome. The available platform documentation does not establish the exact Apple TV composition interface. |
| Direct Messages and account management | Better on another device | Do not assume the mobile feature set or controls are reproduced on Apple TV. A phone, tablet, or computer is generally more practical for detailed account tasks. |
| Spaces and other interactive features | Not established for Apple TV | X’s general product description includes features such as Spaces, but the cited support material does not document their Apple TV behavior. |
How to install X on Apple TV
- Open the App Store on an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K.
- Search for X.
- Select the official app published by X Corp.
- Select Get, then authenticate with your Apple Account if prompted.
- Open X after it installs and follow the sign-in prompts shown in the app.
Apple says Get indicates a free app; Open means it is already installed. The exact X sign-in flow can change, so follow the instructions currently displayed by the app rather than expecting a particular activation-code or QR-code method.

Is X free on Apple TV?
The U.S. App Store lists X as free to download, with in-app purchases. You do not need an X Premium subscription merely to download the app. Paid X services or features may cost extra.
During an August 18, 2026 check, the U.S. App Store listing showed X Premium Basic at $4 per month or $42 per year, Premium at $11 per month or $114.99 per year, and Premium Plus at $50 per month or $490 per year. These are volatile U.S. App Store figures, not universal prices. X’s Premium FAQ separately says Basic starts at $3 per month or $32 per year on the web, subject to local pricing and taxes. Web and App Store billing prices are not interchangeable: X Premium FAQ.

What to do if X does not appear in the App Store
- Confirm the Apple TV model. Apple TV 3rd generation cannot download new apps.
- Check tvOS. Open Settings → System → Software Updates and install an offered update.
- Search for “X.” The current listing uses X, so a search only for Twitter may not find it.
- Check the listing on your storefront. Regional availability can differ, and a listing for another platform does not prove it is installable on your specific television.
- Review account and household restrictions. Apple Account country or region, age settings, or parental restrictions may affect what appears.
- Restart Apple TV and search again. If the app remains unavailable, use X on another supported device and consider AirPlay for viewing.
Native X app or AirPlay?
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Native X app | Remote-controlled viewing of content the tvOS app supports, without mirroring a phone. | Apple TV and storefront compatibility are required, and the mobile feature set should not be assumed. |
| AirPlay from iPhone or iPad | A one-off video or feed, using X when the native app is unavailable, or accessing a mobile feature. | The phone or tablet remains involved; calls, notifications, orientation, and connection quality can disrupt viewing. See Apple AirPlay. |
| Phone, tablet, or computer | Posting, messaging, moderation, long threads, and detailed account management. | Less suited to shared large-screen viewing. |
Privacy and household viewing
The U.S. App Store rates X 16+ and identifies controls related to age assurance, parental controls, mature or suggestive themes, profanity or crude humor, advertising, messaging, user-generated content, and social media. X contains user-generated material, so a shared television can expose content to people in the room beyond the account holder. Review X’s content controls and Apple TV parental restrictions for your household.
Apple’s App Store privacy label says the app may collect and link categories including purchases, location, contacts, user content, search history, browsing history, identifiers, and diagnostics. The label is Apple’s presentation of the developer’s privacy disclosures, not an independent privacy audit; practices can vary by feature and use. Details are on the App Store listing.

Is X on Apple TV worth using?
The native app is a reasonable choice if you have an App Store-capable Apple TV and mainly want public video, livestreams, sports clips, breaking-news feeds, or event conversations on a shared screen. It is less compelling if your main reason for using X is writing posts, managing messages, moderating an account, or adjusting settings: those tasks favor a device with a keyboard or touchscreen. If your Apple TV cannot install the app, AirPlay can serve for occasional viewing, while the phone or tablet remains the more practical tool for interaction.
